6-Day Through Japan’s Historic Post Town of the Nakasendo & the stunning Kaida Plateau
Experience the very heart of Japan’s legendary Nakasendo Way on this 6-day guided walking adventure through the historic Kiso Valley. Rather than travelling the full route between Kyoto and Tokyo, this carefully crafted itinerary focuses on the most scenic and historically significant section of the trail, where beautifully preserved Edo-period post towns, ancient cedar forests and mountain passes combine to create one of Japan’s finest walking experiences. What truly sets this journey apart is our inclusion of the magnificent Kaida Plateau, a spectacular highland region offering panoramic views of sacred Mount Ontake, peaceful forests, traditional farming villages and one of the most beautiful walks in Japan. Most itineraries overlook this hidden gem, but we believe it’s one of the absolute highlights of the entire region.
This walk forms one of our Essentials tours, designed for keen walkers with a good to excellent level of fitness. Nakasendo Way Essentials follows the historic trail between the region’s most iconic post towns, including Magome, Tsumago and Narai. With longer walking days and fewer transfers, you’ll experience the Nakasendo much as travellers did centuries ago, walking from village to village through spectacular mountain landscapes and immersing yourself in the history and traditions of rural Japan. Travelling on Japan’s renowned rail network between key destinations and staying in welcoming yet simple local ryokans and family-run inns, this journey offers an authentic and affordable way to experience one of Japan’s most celebrated long-distance trails. Each evening, unwind with regional cuisine and warm Japanese hospitality after another rewarding day on the trail. Accompanied by our experienced English-speaking Japanese guides, you’ll discover the stories behind the ancient highway, learn about the customs and culture that shaped the region, and gain a deeper appreciation of a Japan that has remained remarkably unchanged for centuries. With your luggage transferred between accommodation each day, you can simply enjoy the walk carrying only a light daypack.
This tour is the perfect choice for travellers who enjoy longer challenging walks and are seeking an active and authentic adventure through rural Japan, staying in simple, traditional accommodation.

Your luggage is transferred each day
Our Nakasendo Way Essentials is a genuine pack-free walking adventure. While you’ll be walking from village to village each day, your main luggage will be transferred between accommodations, allowing you to enjoy the trail carrying only a light daypack with your daily essentials. This essentials tour is a true walking journey (with no flexible walking options), making it ideal for guests who enjoy longer days on the trail and the satisfaction of completing each stage on foot.
Wow-mazing bonus walk
One of the true hidden gems of this journey is the inclusion of the spectacular Mt Ontake Pilgrim Trail, the Managing Director of Life’s An Adventure’s favourite walk in Japan. Unlike the more travelled sections of the Nakasendo Way, this ancient pilgrimage route leads through peaceful forests, past sacred shrines, crystal-clear streams and beautiful waterfalls, revealing a side of Japan few visitors ever experience. Rich in history, spirituality and breathtaking natural beauty, it’s a memorable highlight that sets this itinerary apart from every other Nakasendo walk.

Take time to explore its charming streets before continuing over the historic Magome Pass, following shaded forest trails, bamboo groves and mountain streams. Your day finishes in Tsumago, widely regarded as the jewel of the Nakasendo. Along the way, pass hidden shrines, crystal-clear streams and traditional Japanese homes surrounded by beautifully tended gardens. With few other walkers, this section offers an authentic glimpse into rural Japan, where life has changed little over the centuries. By afternoon, arrive in the historic town of Kiso-Fukushima, a former checkpoint town that played an important role during the Edo period. This charming mountain town, with its traditional streets and riverside setting, will be your home for the next three nights. After settling into your traditional ryokan or Japanese hotel, enjoy another delicious regional dinner.
DAY 4: Mt Ontake Pilgrim Walk
Japan’s Most Sacred Mountain

WALK GRADE: 6kms. Elevation gain: 250 m. Elevation loss: 250 m. Moderate. Approx. 4–5 hours.
ITINERARY: After breakfast, journey through the spectacular mountain landscapes of south-east Nagano before transferring to the foot of Mount Ontake, one of Japan’s most sacred mountains. This is our owner’s favourite walk in Japan and a truly unforgettable experience that few international visitors discover. Your pilgrimage begins with a steep stone staircase climbing through magnificent forest to the Omata Sansha, the Monument of the Three Great Gods of Ontake. Continuing along ancient pilgrimage trails, you’ll pass numerous Reijinhi stone monuments, sacred sites and shrines that have guided mountain pilgrims for centuries. The trail leads through the Hanadofukando and Juni Gongen Shrine, offering a fascinating insight into the spiritual traditions that have shaped this remarkable mountain. Reaching the spectacular Shintaki Falls, watch as water plunges 50 metres into the forest below. The falls remain an important place of purification, where worshippers continue to undertake traditional cleansing rituals before ascending the mountain. After enjoying lunch in this peaceful setting, continue to the beautiful Kiyotaki Falls, another sacred waterfall used in purification ceremonies and the perfect finale to this deeply rewarding walk. Afterwards, return to Kiso-Fukushima to relax before another delicious regional dinner.
TERRAIN: Forest trails, historic mountain paths, stone steps and traditional village streets. A steady climb to Torii Pass followed by a gradual descent into Narai. Some uneven surfaces and tree roots.
WALK GRADE: 9 km. Elevation gain: 507 m. Elevation loss: 500 m. Moderate. Approx. 3–4 hours.
ITINERARY: After breakfast, begin your final walk on the Nakasendo in the historic post town of Yabuhara. Climb gradually through magnificent cedar forests to Torii Pass, one of the most celebrated and atmospheric sections of the trail. The peaceful woodland, moss-covered pathways and centuries-old stone markers create a memorable reminder of the route’s rich history. From the pass, descend into the beautifully preserved post town of Narai, often known as the “wealthiest post town on the Nakasendo.” Lined with elegant wooden buildings, traditional inns, artisan workshops and inviting cafés, Narai is the perfect place to celebrate the completion of your journey.
ITINERARY: After one final traditional Japanese breakfast, your Nakasendo Way adventure comes to an end. From Kiso-Fukushima, regular train services make it easy to continue your journey to Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya and many other destinations. We highly recommend extending your stay to explore the vibrant neighbourhoods of Tokyo or the magnificent temples, gardens and cultural treasures of Kyoto. As you depart, you’ll take home far more than memories of beautiful walks. You’ll leave with a deeper appreciation of rural Japan, its rich history, warm hospitality and the unforgettable experience of walking one of the world’s most iconic historic trails.
