You’ll feel all the drama on this walk!
The story of the fortress built for a king atop Sri Lanka’s famed Lion Rock could have come straight from a Shakespearean drama.
Constructed by slaves for King Kasyapa (477–495 AD), who seized the throne after killing his father, the remarkable fortress was once adorned with vibrant frescoes and an impressive palace complex.
The citadel was famously accessed through the mouth of an enormous carved lion – an entrance designed to both impress and intimidate visitors.
On our 10-day Sri Lanka pack-free guided walk, you’ll climb the stairways that lead to the Sky Palace, passing galleries decorated with extraordinary ancient frescoes. Painted more than 1,600 years ago, these artworks are believed to portray the elegant ladies of King Kasyapa’s royal court.
Reaching the summit is an unforgettable moment, not only because of the remarkable history beneath your feet, but also for the sweeping views across the surrounding jungle and countryside.
The adventure continues the following day with a visit to Minneriya National Park, one of the best places in Sri Lanka to see wild elephants, which often gather in impressive numbers.
Alongside them you may spot playful monkeys and an abundance of birdlife. Later, you’ll walk through Madakumbura Village with a local guide, following trails that wind through tea plantations, spice groves and forest paths, all framed by views of the dramatic Knuckles mountain range.
Along the way you’ll enjoy authentic local dining, an engaging cooking class, and time to soak up spectacular coastal sunsets.
This carefully curated journey begins and ends in Colombo, providing an easy start and finish to your adventure while showcasing the very best of Sri Lanka’s history, spirituality and natural beauty.
