You’ll experience the REAL Japan on this walk

Our motto, “Walking is only part of the adventure”, becomes completely clear once you join our 8-day Basho Tohoku pack-free guided walk in Japan.

A tall, ancient wooden pagoda stands amid towering trees in a lush forest, perfect for walking holidays. Stone steps guide you up to the structure, surrounded by verdant greenery and ferns under a clear, bright sky.

This immersive journey through the beautiful Tohoku region on the island of Honshu in northern Japan offers far more than a collection of scenic trails – which are truly splendid by the way!

A wooden hot tub sits on a platform, offering a serene view reminiscent of Japan's Basho Tohoku Walk. Overlooking a cascading waterfall and autumn-kissed trees, the scene is framed by a bamboo fence, with a wooden bench inviting moments of tranquil reflection.

Inspired by the historic travels of the renowned haiku poet Matsuo Basho, the tour provides a thoughtful and enriching exploration of the culture, traditions and landscapes that define the spirit of northern Japan.

The entrance to this traditional Japanese building, reminiscent of stops along Japan's Basho Tohoku Walk, features a wooden gate and a neatly landscaped garden. With beige walls, a tiled roof, and a sign with Japanese characters, the partly cloudy sky enhances its serene ambiance.

While the walking itself is spectacular, the experience goes well beyond the path. Throughout the tour you will take part in cultural encounters that most visitors to Japan rarely have the chance to enjoy.

You will relax on a serene cruise around the coastal inlets of Shirogama and Okumatsushima, observing tranquil waterways and forested islands. You will watch an expressive traditional dance performance, gaining insight into the movement, music and storytelling that form an important part of local heritage.

A beautifully shaped bonsai tree with lush green foliage sits in a rectangular pot. Like life's adventure, the tree stands against a shimmering gold backdrop, highlighting its intricate branches and textured bark, ready to take you on a journey through its miniature landscape.

You will also meet a highly respected bonsai artist in his own home, where he will explain how his delicate and intricate creations are shaped by the surrounding natural world. A deeply meaningful Shinto ritual at the sacred Dewa Sanzan shrine offers an additional moment of reflection and connection with ancient spiritual traditions.

A person carefully sculpts a miniature tree in a bonsai workshop, wearing a blue shirt and focused on their meticulous work. The green branches contrast against the dark background, echoing Japan's Basho Tohoku Walk and highlighting the art of bonsai.

A highlight of the journey is the special overnight stay in the World Heritage listed town of Ginzan Onsen, famous for its atmospheric wooden inns and peaceful riverside setting. This charming town provides a perfect pause in the journey, allowing you to unwind in one of Japan’s most picturesque hot spring environments.

The indoor hot spring bath, reminiscent of Japan's Basho Tohoku Walk, features large windows overlooking a serene garden. Tiled walls encircle the bath, which offers two headrests on the water surface. Natural light pours in, illuminating this tranquil setting inspired by Basho's picturesque stroll.
