You’ll be bamboozled by Japan’s ‘army’ of 3700 stone statues

Tucked away on the Kunisaki Peninsula in Kyushu – Japan’s southernmost main island – is a spiritual and cultural treasure: hundreds of ancient stone Buddhas and pagodas hidden among mountains, forests, and temples.

Numerous ancient stone Buddha statues, weathered and worn, are seated closely together in a cave-like setting. Perfect for Japan walking holidays, these statues vary in size and detail, with some wearing crowns or featuring intricate carvings against the rocky, textured background.

These statues, carved more than a thousand years ago, are part of the unique Rokugō-Manzan tradition, a fusion of Shinto, Buddhism, and mountain worship.

Often compared to China’s Terracotta Warriors, this “army” of stone figures reflects the region’s deep spiritual roots and the legacy of the yamabushi, or warrior-monks.

Two hikers in helmets stand on a rocky ledge, savoring their walking holiday experiences as they overlook a lush, green valley with jagged peaks in the distance. The cave-like overhang frames the scenic view, promising an adventurous location.

Many were sculpted by monks and local artisans as expressions of devotion. Today, they are revered not just as sacred icons, but as cultural landmarks that embody harmony between nature and faith.

On day two of our 8-day, fully guided Kunisaki Spiritual Trail walk, you’ll encounter these statues up close – a truly unforgettable moment. But the magic doesn’t stop there.

A stone statue of a seated figure is nestled among rocks and sand in a cave-like setting, offering a serene stop for those on walking holidays. Surrounded by greenery and small plants, it creates a harmonious natural environment perfect for reflection.

This journey is where ancient tradition, natural beauty and thoughtful adventure converge. With private transfers and customisable walking routes, it’s a seamless experience for all fitness levels.

Expert local guides will lead you through serene forests and scenic villages, sharing stories and insights along the way. You’ll visit sacred places like Komo Shrine and the dramatic Rakanji Temple, carved into a cliffside and home to those 3,700 stone statues of Buddha’s disciples.

A person in hiking gear stands on a rocky ledge, holding trekking poles. They overlook a mountainous landscape with lush foliage and jagged peaks under a clear blue sky. Fall colors are visible among the greenery.

The trail itself – Kunisaki Hantou Minemichi Long Trail – is among Japan’s finest, winding through landscapes that seem untouched by time. Along the way, you’ll discover hidden gems like the historic Kozanji and Fuki-ji Temples and natural marvels like the soaring rock formations of Ofuda Iwaya.

And when the day is done, you’ll rest in handpicked, traditional accommodation offering comfort and authenticity. Meals are another highlight – expect delicious, locally inspired dishes that will linger in your memory as much as the views.

This is more than a walk. It’s a journey into the spiritual heart of Japan.

Hikers ascend a rocky, narrow path along a green mountainside with cloudy skies above. The terrain is rugged and steep, with lush foliage surrounding the trail.
