US hikers using goats to carry their packs
US hikers using goats to carry their packs. Taking a goat on a bushwalk to help carry your gear might sound strange but in the US it’s a different story.
One adventurous couple, Clay and Charlotte Zimmerman, have been using goats as pack animals on their hikes for quite some time. Their passion for multi-day backpacking trips took them across the mountainous landscapes of their home state, Wyoming. However, their routine changed when Charlotte began experiencing debilitating joint pain, especially in her knees. Concerned about her mobility, she eventually sought medical advice, only to hear a daunting prognosis: her doctor advised her to set aside her backpacking days or risk needing a knee replacement.
Determined not to abandon their beloved outdoor excursions, the Zimmermans explored options for pack animals to help carry Charlotte’s gear. Horses seemed impractical due to their high cost and care requirements, and llamas were dismissed as “too temperamental.” After some research, they discovered a surprising alternative—goats. They decided to try a few adult males, naming them Paco, Levi, and Buck, and outfitting them with custom-made saddles and panniers.

To their delight, goats turned out to be the perfect solution. “Goats are friendly and extremely low-maintenance,” says Clay, now in his 60s. “They’re really the perfect pack animal.” Their new hiking companions not only lightened Charlotte’s load but added joy and companionship to the couple’s outdoor adventures, proving that their passion for the wilderness could continue, just with a little help from their four-legged friends.
