On this 5-day journey we’ll explore the best of the Yorke Peninsula, one of South Australia’s highlights. The Yorke Peninsula is one of South Australia’s most accessible beach retreats, located just over an hour’s drive from Adelaide and boasting 700 kilometres of pristine coastline. Beautiful beaches and friendly coastal towns beckon, while old mining villages and breathtaking national parks await inland. This tour has been carefully designed to showcase the highlights and the best walks of the region, including some of Yorke Peninsula’s beautiful beaches and trails.
Walk with as little as your water and lunch
We have designed this walking holiday so you can enjoy the scenery without the heavy burden of carrying your clothes or a heavy pack. Walk with as little as your camera, lunch and water each day and we will take care of your bags being transported to your accommodation.
4 night stay
The Marion Bay Tavern and Motel is a family-owned and run business and situated in beautiful Marion Bay, 282 kilometres from Adelaide on the Yorke Peninsula. The ambience is warm and welcoming, with a magnificent view of the jetty and adjacent beaches, and was built with a unique blend of materials including former jetty pylons, corrugated iron, and liberal use of jarrah timbers. The Tavern’s already remarkable reputation for fine food and good service is enhanced by the inventive and fresh menu.
Boasting indoor and outdoor, relaxed all-weather spaces The Tavern also has a fully licenced restaurant, fine wine, bar, all day wood fired pizza, take away liquor, all Foxtel channels, a courtesy bus on request and quality tea and coffee, 5 spacious motel rooms each with a queen and a single bed, equipped with all modern amenities.

PRE-DAY: Book your flights to arrive in Adelaide at least the day prior to your tour.
SUGGESTED PRE-TOUR NIGHT HOTEL: We suggest the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide, a 4 star hotel overlooking Victoria Square in the heart of Adelaide’s entertainment and shopping district; this is also our meeting point at 7.30am on the first morning of the tour.
TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 3.5 hours to Hillocks Drive, Yorke Peninsula.
TRAIL NOTES: 5km walk , 3-hours walking along coastline with breaks. Easy Grade.
TERRAIN: Mixture of beach walking, rocky coastal escarpments and dune edges.
WALK ITINERARY: This morning, our guides will meet you in the foyer of the Hilton Hotel, Adelaide at 7:30am. We have about 300km (3.5hrs) to cover to reach Butlers Beach on the Yorke Peninsula. To break up the journey we will stop in Port Wakefield for a morning tea break after 1h 30mins, then a further hour to Minlaton to stretch our legs before continuing on for the last hour when we’ll arrive near Butlers Beach at Hillock Drive for a spot of lunch. From here we’ll meet our local and extremely knowledgeable guide to enjoy walking to Lookout Point with a mixture of beach walking, rocky coastal escarpments and dune edges while taking in views of Kangaroo Island across the waters of Investigator Strait. At the end of the walk we will call into Meehan’s Hill with the bus for great views of Marion Bay. Our accommodation for the next 4 nights is at Marion Bay Motel & Tavern, a lovely family owned and run business with magnificent views of the jetty and adjacent beaches. Tonight we’ll enjoy a delicious a la carte meal at Marion Bay Tavern served with local wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 18km approx combined walks, around 5 hours walking with breaks. Easy Grade.
TERRAIN: Mostly gentle formed pathways
WALK ITINERARY: After a hearty breakfast at the tavern, and with packed lunches in our day packs, we head out directly from the motel. We’ll walk into the Innes National Park adjoining Marion Bay and follow a coastal trail towards Stenhouse Bay with its long jetty that is associated with gypsum mining and export. We’ll continue on from here with the cliff top loop known as the Stenhouse Bay Lookout Walk. As the name suggests there are multiple stunning lookouts with views across Investigator Strait. From here we’ll backtrack a little to locate the Thomson Pfitzner Plaster Trail Hike that follows a disused railway line through to Inneston offering further interpretive signs along the way about local history, particularly its mining past. Here we can explore the Inneston Historic Walk at our leisure taking in the structures and ruins of this once thriving village. This walk will be approximately 18km on mostly gentle formed pathways, returning to Marion Bay by mini-bus. Tonight we’ll enjoy another lovely a la carte meal at Marion Bay Tavern served with local wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 13km approx combined walks, around 4 hours walking, Easy Grade.
TERRAIN:Â Mix of bush tracks and formed pathways.
WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast, and with packed lunches in our day packs, we head back out to Pondalowie Bay for the start of our walk today. Here we’ll see spectacular coastal views into Spencer gulf on the 4km return to Royston Head Hike. If we feel like it we can also complete the 1km loop of the West Cape Headland Hike where we’ll reach the West Cape lighthouse. If we’re lucky we may even see dolphins surfing at Tommo’s Break. Before returning to our accommodation for a well-earned rest we’ll stop to look for the wreck of the Ethel, a three-masted iron barque that ran aground here in 1904. It may be covered in its usual blanket of sand, but if so we’ll certainly see her anchor on display at the lookout above. Tonight enjoy an a la carte dinner at Marion Bay Tavern served with local wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 15km, 4-5hours walking with breaks, Medium Grade. Shorter options available.
TERRAIN: Mix of beach walks, clifftop trails and natural surface track.
WALK ITINERARY: After a leisurely breakfast we’ll drive to Dunn Point to start our final walk in the area down to Swincer Rocks. Some of the best surfing beaches in South Australia can be found here. During this section keep eyes peeled for dolphins enjoying the waves. You will experience some spectacular scenery along this coastline and see a variety of flora, fauna and birdlife. There is a mixture of walking terrain alternating between natural surface tracks and beach walking. At the end of our walk today we’ll drive back (30-minute) to meet in the tavern at Marion Bay for a celebratory drink at the end of our ‘Walk the Yorke’ four days of hiking.  A la carte dinner at Marion Bay Tavern served with local wines.
TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 1 hour from accommodation to Bluff Beach. Midday: 1 hour to Port Wakefield. Afternoon: 1h30minutes to Adelaide.
TRAIL NOTES: Bluff Beach to t 3-hour walking, Easy Grade.
TERRAIN: The track climbs gently on a compact rocky base, with a short downhill to complete the circuit.
WALK ITINERARY: Today we’ll return to Adelaide, but before doing so we’ll enjoy a walk from Bluffs Beach to Bamboo Beach. This coastal walk will take around 3hours. For lunch, we’ll stop at Port Wakefield, a coastal town of the Adelaide Plains. The town is located approximately 100kms North of Adelaide. Steeped in history, the town was created to cater for the needs of the early settlers. With the development of the agricultural, mining and later the fishing industries of South Australia, Port Wakefield became the pivot point for such products. Afterwards, we return to Adelaide where our journey concludes at the Hilton Hotel, Adelaide. After a fabulous five days we hope you’ve enjoyed the full experience of the Yorke Peninsula.
