Starting the adventure with a walk on a section of the Whitsundays Great Walk where we’ll see expansive views out to the 74 islands that make up the Whitsundays that we’ll be exploring some of, over the next few days. Our unique base for this journey is on the historic tall ship Solway Lass where we will sail through the Whitsundays taking in vistas of aqua-marine water, lush tropical islands and white sparkling beaches. The Whitsunday Islands National Park and adjacent waters are part of the World Heritage-listed Great Barrier Reef. The first and largest World Heritage Area in Australia. Whilst island hopping enjoy a variety of trails, some of which are only accessible by boat and take in incredible vistas. Highlights include visiting Whitehaven Beach, Hill Inlet Lookout as well as enjoying plenty of snorkelling.

Today is an arrival day. Book your own flight to arrive any time into the Whitsundays and make our own way to the Mantra Club Croc, Airlie Beach. Your accommodation has been booked in a deluxe garden view room. Accommodation is based on twin share (note: solo travellers will need to pay a single supplement cost). At 6.00pm meet your host in the hotel foyer for a drive around Airlie Beach to our dinner location for a hosted welcome dinner. Enjoy getting to know your guides and fellow guests.
TRAIL NOTES: Cedar Creek Falls track to Lookout and rock pools 1.5km (45mins). Grade: Moderate.
TERRAIN: From Cedar Creek Falls lookout, descend through eucalypt forest and dry rainforest to the rock pools below. There are many steps on this walk, so be prepared for an uphill climb on our return.
WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast we will be transferred at 10am to Red Cat Adventures Shop on Main Street, Airlie Beach. Todays’ full day tour run by Red Cat Adventures sees us exploring Cedar Creek Falls about 30minutes drive away where we can swim with turtles at the majestic waterfalls, surrounded by tropical flora and fauna. Enjoy a guided walk to the top of the Falls for stunning views before returning to Airlie beach to the Coral Sea Resort where you can relax around the oceanfront resort pool and enjoy a delicious lunch at the restaurant, The Rocks, prepared by the local chef. For todays excursion it would be a good idea to wear practical clothing (waterproof jacket), enclosed shoes, swimmers and a beach towel in a small backpack.
At 5pm we’ll transfer down to the marina to join our vessel Solway Lass which will be our home for the next 4 nights. Tonight we will set sail to a beautiful anchorage spot to enjoy the sunset and dinner under the stars. Our sailing adventure begins.
TRAIL NOTES: Spion Kop 4.7 kms of walking (3hrs). Grade: Moderate. Extension options to Balancing Rock (0.35km – 12mins) and Mt Jeffreys (2.6km – approx. 1hr). Grade: Moderate.
TERRAIN: Bauer Bay to Spion Kop track relatively flat. Mt Jeffereys is on a gradual slope.
WALK ITINERARY: Enjoy breakfast on deck before we set sail and cruise through the beautiful Whitsundays taking in vistas of aqua-marine water, lush tropical islands and white sparkling beaches. Our first stop is the idyllic island of South Molle. On arrival we disembark and enjoy our hike through Molle National Park exploring beautiful rainforests and eucalypt forests. Our walk makes its way to Spion Kop Lookout offering spectacular vistas of the Whitsunday passage and the island fringed by reef. The track also passes an ancient Ngaro indigenous tribe stone quarry. If you would like to explore further take the short walk to Balancing Rock and for 360 degree sensational views of the mainland and Whitsuday Islands the Mt Jeffreys track is a must! Once back on board the Solway enjoy a lovely lunch. In the afternoon we stop to enjoy our first snorkel surrounded by colourful fish and reef. Return to our tallship with time to relax on deck or in your cabin as we make our way to our evening location to drop anchor. Tonight, enjoy an alfresco dinner on the deck under the beautiful nights sky.
TRAIL NOTES: Whitsunday Peak 5km walk (4 hours) 437m ascent. Difficult.
Hill Inlet Lookout 1.3km (40mins). Easy.
TERRAIN: The track is on uneven rugged terrain and a good level of fitness is required. The views at the top are worth every step.
WALKING ITINERARY: After breakfast, we make our way to Cid Harbour and beautiful Whitsunday Island. Today we will walk to the roof of the Whitsundays to witness spectacular views of the sprinkling of idyllic islands in this region. Situated in the Whitsunday National Park, our walk on the Peak track journeys through rainforests and heath as it makes its way to the summit. Enjoy lunch back on the boat as we cruise to Tongue Bay where we’ll take a short stroll up Hill Inlet with three lookout points taking in the spectacular views over the sparkling turquoise waters and white sands. Later we’ll cruise to the award winning, pristine Whitehaven Beach which stretches over 7kms for overnight anchorage and dinner on deck.
TRAIL NOTES: Chance Bay 3.5km (1.5hr). Grade: Moderate. Border Island 1km (30mins). Grade: Moderate.
TERRAIN: Chance Bay easy gradient on a sandy path. Border Island short steep walk with some steps and uneven rugged terrain.
WALK ITINERARY: Enjoy your morning coffee and breakfast on board before being transferred to South Whitehaven Beach where we’ll walk to Chance Bay. The path to the secluded Chance Bay is shaded by a mix of eucalypt, hoop pine and grass tree forest. After a morning enjoying some beach activities we’ll return to the vessel for some lunch and cruise to Border Island. This short, relatively steep walk brings you to a breathtaking lookout of ocean views and then the first snorkel opportunity today. This is a snorkelling paradise, teeming with colourful tropical fish and coral and you can snorkel alongside sea turtles which are often found in abundance swimming over the coral reef. Later cruise to Saba Bay for another snorkel before we travel to our overnight anchorage and last evening meal under the stars.
TRAIL NOTES: Whitsunday Cairn 4km (3.5hrs). Grade: Difficult.
TERRAIN: Steep and challenging with a rugged track.
WALK ITINERARY: This morning after an early breakfast we will adventure up the Whitsunday Cairn track. This walk in on the most northern beach of the Whitsunday Islands and takes us through hoop pines and dry rainforest to emerge on top of the ridge to stunning views across to Hook Island. Take a moment to reflect on the beauty of this landscape and vast oceans that we have explored on this journey. Enjoy a delicious lunch back on board the Solway Lass before we set sail one last time and head back to Coral Sea Marina, Airlie Beach at around 3pm. Transfers will be waiting to take you back to the Mantra Club Croc. Tonight we’ll enjoy a celebratory dinner at the Anchor Bar in Airlie Beach.
