Tropics World Heritage walk

TRAIL NOTES: 6.5km walk.

WALKING ITINERARY: Today is a day of unparalleled choice, beauty, and variety.  After breakfast, we will head for today’s adventure.

This morning choose from one of two options:
OPTION 1: Choose to do a Daintree wilderness discovery river cruise with your naturalist guide pointing out wildlife and the foreshore. From the rainforest to the mangroves the scenery is spectacular. Cruise down the river watching out for colourful birdlife such as parrots and Azure Kingfishers and keep your eye out for the estuarine crocodiles.

OPTION 2: Alternatively with the Great Barrier Reef just a stone’s throw away, visitors are able to explore one of the greatest natural wonders of the world. This beautiful part of the tropics is truly where the rainforest meets the reef. Our morning ocean adventure explores the Mackay Cay with eco appreciation presentations. This is a snorkelling paradise, teeming with colourful tropical fish and coral and you can snorkel alongside sea turtles which are often found in abundance swimming over the coral reef.

Enjoy a beachside lunch, before the group comes back together and enjoys an afternoon walk in the beautiful Daintree Rainforest in the Cooper Creek Wilderness region. Today’s walk takes us through the beautiful Daintree Rainforest, the best place to witness the world’s oldest rainforest and the extraordinary biodiversity found in the region’s backyard, which has survived all the changes wrought by time. Walk with your local guides and learn about the cultural and natural heritage values of this complex eco system.

Afterwards, we head back to the remote Heritage Lodge with time to relax. Tonight enjoy dinner in the lodge’s open-air restaurant featuring candles and flaming torches. Savour in the local produce created by the resident chef accompanied by wonderful wines.

This walking track offers secluded forest-fringed views of the lake and excellent opportunities for viewing wildlife, including saw-shelled turtles and eastern water dragons. You may be lucky enough to see the long olive-green body of a freshwater eel. This unusual-looking fish spends up to 30 years in Lake Barrine before migrating to the sea, via Toohey Creek and the Mulgrave River, to breed and die. Afterwards, we’ll head to the historic town of Yungaburra in the Atherton Tablelands and your accommodation at the charming Eden House Retreat where we spend the next 2 nights. After this, we will set out to walk the Hypipamee Crater located high on the southern Evelyn Tableland, in the Hugh Nelson Range. The crate is in Hypipamee Crater National Park, centred around a volcanic pipe, thought to have been created by a massive gas explosion. A platform at the end of a 400m walking track through the rainforest provides an uninterrupted view of the remaining crater. The crater is almost 70m across with sheer granite walls. Fifty-eight metres below the rim is a lake over 70m deep, covered with a green layer of native waterweed. It is a hot spot for possums with several different species found in the area and a good place for seeing high-altitude birds. Afterwards, we’ll head on to the aptly named Waterfall Circuit in the Atherton Tablelands region. TRAIL NOTES: 11km walk with gradual inclines. Shorter 4km walk available.

TERRAIN:  Some beach walking, then gradual climb on a dirt track to Mount Kataloo.

WALK ITINERARY: Today is something amazingly special, as we board our boat and cruise and head across to the beautiful Dunk Island. This island was originally the home of a resort that was destroyed by two consecutive ‘once in a hundred-year’ cyclones which devasted the facilities. The abandoned ghost town resort can be seen at the start of our walk today, as we make our way along the beachfront. From here our trail gradually climbs through the tropical rainforest, with colourful butterflies fluttering past us as we make our way up to the top of Mount Kataloo. At the top, we will rest and take in the spectacular views across the neighbouring islands and Coral Sea. After this we head down into Palm Valley and across to Coconut Beach. Enjoy time for a swim on the island before our boat transfer collects us for the journey back to the mainland.
