Lake Pedder situated in Tasmania’s South West Wilderness region is a world heritage area of ancient rainforests, majestic peaks and pristine lakes. On this 3 day walk you will marvel at forests of towering sassafras, myrtle and huon pine trees, some of which are over 3000 years old. See unique varieties of plants and an abundance of native fauna such as quolls and platypus. We explore the remote South West Wilderness region near Lake Pedder, which is surrounded by the Southwest National Park. At over six hundred thousand hectares, this is the largest National Park in Tasmania and one of the last remaining temperate wilderness areas on Earth. The park holds some of Australia’s most striking features including wild rivers, rugged mountains, button grass plains and green rainforests. The beauty of this area is its seclusion, cut off from the chaos of the modern world.
Walk with as little as your camera, lunch and water
Our speciality is providing Pack Free walks allowing our guests the opportunity to walk with as little as their water lunch, and camera. This freedom allows you to enjoy your walk not endure it, so you can fully absorb the magnificent scenery you encounter.
Charming rustic accommodation
On night one we stay on the edge of the remote South West Wilderness at the Giants’ Table & Cottages. Our accommodation is in cute cottages centred around a giant tree surrounded by World Heritage Wilderness areas and National Park where we will be well looked after by our charming hosts. The main building has a bar and restaurant you can relax in after a day’s walk enjoying wonderful varied menu accompanied with fine Tasmanian wine.
Rooming: We utilise 1, 2, 3 and 4 bedroom cottages on the property.
Remote accommodation
On night two we enjoy a relaxed evening on the shores of Lake Pedder at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge. This remote 3accommodation has a cosy bar and lounge to relax in after a day’s walk and restaurant for dining.
Rooming: Couples and singles paying a single supplement will stay in a Pedder Wing Lakeview Room with a queen bed. Those requiring twin beds will stay in the Pedder Wing Rooms, these rooms are the same size but face the other direction.
Please note this is an extremely remote region and therefore accommodation and facilities are comfortable but more basic than what you will find in a major city, we have chosen the best accommodation and rooms at each property and the best available in this region.
Accompanied with Tasmanian wine
This tour explores the remote regions of the South West Wilderness and Lake Pedder. We have chosen two accommodation providers to minimise travel each day.
On night one dine in the restaurant at Giants Table showcasing a fantastic Tasmanian inspired menu designed by Chef Benjamin Knack utilizing locally sourced produce and served with Tasmanian wine.
Whilst on night two we dine at the Twelve Trees Restaurant at Pedder Wilderness Lodge featuring Australian favourites paired with Tasmanian wines.
Choose what suits you.
With two guides on all our tours of 8 or more guests, we offer flexible walking options with easier and more challenging itineraries most days.

The views from the top are sensational – the whole panorama of the southwest is before you, from the lakes below to Frenchmans Cap, the “ice-chewed” Arthur Range and Mt Anne, and even glimpses of the Southern Ocean beyond. On the return trip, if there is time, we will make a brief side-trip to the “Creepy Crawly” nature walk. WALK ITINERARY: Today we firstly explore the Lake Pedder Dam. It is an amazing man-made achievement in itself and gives a different view of the lake. There are so many great walks around Lake Pedder, one of them being the Twisted Sister Track. It is as good as rainforest gets and expect to not see another person. We stop for morning tea here and enjoy the serenity. Then head back to explore the Upper Florentine Valley, part of the South-West wilderness of Tasmania which is celebrated for its wet sclerophyll and temperate forests, and is one of the greatest temperate wilderness areas on Earth. After years of dispute and protest amid forestry industry staff and environmental groups, the Florentine River Regional Reserve adjoined the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in June 2013 as UNESCO officially recognised the environmental and cultural values of the area. The lower canopy of the valley floor is dominated by an assortment of sassafras, leatherwood, ferns, mosses, lichens and outcropping limestone, whilst this curtain of green is pierced by the trunks of some of the tallest trees on earth. Threatened species, such as the Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, the Spotted-Tail Quoll, and the White Goshawk, find important habitat in the old growth forests that are still left in the Upper Florentine Valley. Afterwards, we return to Hobart the end of a remarkable journey.
ARRIVAL TIME: We arrive in Hobart at approximately 7.45pm depending on the pace of the group.
