Lake Peddar situated in Tasmania’s South West Wilderness region is a world heritage area of ancient rainforests, majestic peaks and pristine lakes. On this 3 day walk you will marvel at forests of towering sassafras, myrtle and huon pine, some over 3000 years old. See unique varieties of plants and see an abundance of native fauna such as quolls and platypus.
This fantastic 3-day walking holiday explores the remote South West Wilderness region near Lake Pedder. The Southwest National Park is over six hundred thousand hectares, and the largest National Park in Tasmania and one of the last remaining temperate wilderness areas on Earth. The park holds some of Australia’s most striking features including wild rivers, rugged mountains, button grass plains and green rainforests. The beauty of this area is its seclusion, being cut off from the chaos of the modern world.
A Pack Free Walk
Our speciality is providing Pack Free walks allowing our guests the opportunity to walk with as little as their water lunch, and camera.
2 nights at Giants’ Table & Cottages
We stay on the edge of the remote South West Wilderness at the Giants’ Table & Cottages. Our accommodation is in cute cottages centred around a Giant tree surrounded by World Heritage Wilderness areas and National Park.
We keep our group sizes small and personalised with a maximum of 10 guests per trip, we find this delivers more personalised service, a great social environment and has less impact on the environment.”
Our guides are proudly 100% Tasmanian. We call them our CEOs – Chief Experience Officers and it’s their job to ensure your tour exceeds your expectations. Our chief guide in this region Jef is Tasmanian born and bred. His wonderful storytelling ability and his vast knowledge of the Tasmanian wilderness, provide the perfect combination to make your experience all that more enjoyable.
Hearty Meals featuring local produce and Tasmanian wine
Each night dine in the restaurant at the hotel, showcasing a fantastic Tasmanian inspired menu designed by Chef Benjamin Knack utilizing locally sourced produce and served with Tasmanian wine.
Be met by your guides at the Hotel Grand Chancellor Hobart at 7.30am. Our journey takes us westwards to our first stop at Mt Field National Park, one of Tasmania’s most loved National Parks. Today we walk to the Tarn Shelf, a series of pretty glacial lakes, where you can marvel at the unusual geology of the tarn, with the colours and crystal clear clarity of the water spectacular on a sunny day. Guests will love the ever-changing diverse scenery on this walk as we follow the undulating ridge lines, crossing beautiful streams, and taking in stunning views across the landscape dotted with waratah and boronia meadows.
Easier Option: We can offer a walk along the same track but turns back earlier a Rodway Hut. This is a 7 km option with 4 hours of walking.
After our walk, we continue to our accommodation for the next 2 nights at the remote Giants’ Table and Cottages. After freshening up, relax in in the lounge and bar area with fellow guests and chat about the day’s adventures, before enjoying a la carte dining in the restaurant served with Tasmanian wine.
After breakfast, we head to the start of our walking trail. Our walk today is stunning from the get-go. We reach the peak after ascending through a magnificent, pristine rain forest and then a sub-alpine belt of pandanus, scoparia and heaths, before reaching the dolerite-boulder strewn gully which provides final access to the small summit plateau. The views from the top are sensational – the whole panorama of the southwest is before you, from the lakes below to Frenchmans Cap, the “ice-chewed” Arthur Range and Mt Anne, and even glimpses of the Southern Ocean beyond. On the return trip, if there is time, we will make a brief side-trip to the “Creepy Crawly” nature walk. We return to our accommodation for a wonderful evening dinner served with Tasmania wine. Again as we have two guides, we can offer a slower and faster group for this walk.

Today we firstly explore the Lake Pedder Dam. It is an amazing man-made achievement in it’ self and gives a different view of the lake. There are so many great walks around Lake Pedder, one of them being the Twisted Sister Track. It’s as good as rainforest gets and expect to not see another person and stop for morning tea and enjoy the serenity. Then head back to explore the Upper Florentine Valley, part of the South-West wilderness of Tasmania which is celebrated for its succulent wet sclerophyll and temperate forests, and is one of the greatest temperate wilderness areas on Earth. After years of dispute and protest amid forestry industry staff and environmental groups, the Florentine River Regional Reserve adjoined the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in June 2013 as UNESCO officially recognised the environmental and cultural values of the area. The lower canopy of the valley floor is dominated by an assortment of Sassafras, Leatherwoods, ferns, mosses, lichens and outcropping limestone, whilst this curtain of green is pierced by the trunks of some of the tallest trees on earth. Threatened species, such as the Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, the Spotted-Tail Quoll, and the White Goshawk, find important habitat in the old growth forests that are still left in the Upper Florentine Valley. Afterwards, we return to Hobart the end of a remarkable journey.
