Lake Pedder Walk

Lake Pedder & South West Wilderness walk

A guided 3 day Pack-Free walk

Lake Pedder situated in Tasmania’s South West Wilderness region is a world heritage area of ancient rainforests, majestic peaks and pristine lakes. On this 3 day walk you will marvel at forests of towering sassafras, myrtle and huon pine trees, some of which are over 3000 years old. See unique varieties of plants and an abundance of native fauna such as quolls and platypus. We explore the remote South West Wilderness region near Lake Pedder, which is surrounded by the Southwest National Park. At over six hundred thousand hectares, this is the largest National Park in Tasmania and one of the last remaining temperate wilderness areas on Earth. The park holds some of Australia’s most striking features including wild rivers, rugged mountains, button grass plains and green rainforests. The beauty of this area is its seclusion, cut off from the chaos of the modern world.

*Due to the temporary closure of Lake Pedder Lodge, this walk is unavailable.

A Pack Free Walk

Walk with as little as your camera, lunch and water

We enjoy two nights on the shores of Lake Pedder at the Pedder Wilderness Lodge.

This remote accommodation has a cosy bar and lounge to relax in after a day’s walk and restaurant for dining.

Rooming: Couples and singles paying a single supplement will stay in a Pedder Wing Lakeview Room with a queen bed. Those requiring twin beds will stay in the Pedder Wing Rooms, these rooms are the same size but face the other direction.

Our journey takes us westwards to our first stop at Mt Field National Park, one of Tasmania’s most loved National Parks.  Today we walk to the Tarn Shelf, a series of pretty glacial lakes, where you can marvel at the unusual geology of the tarn, with the colours and crystal clear clarity of the water spectacular on a sunny day.  Guests will love the ever-changing diverse scenery on this walk as we follow the undulating ridgelines, crossing beautiful streams, and taking in stunning views across the landscape dotted with waratah and boronia meadows.

After our walk, we continue to our accommodation for 2 nights at Pedder Wilderness Lodge. After freshening up, join fellow guests and chat about the day’s adventures, before enjoying dinner served with Tasmanian wine.

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 40-minute transfer from our accommodation to start of the trail. Afternoon: 30-minute transfer from the end of the walk to accommodation.

TRAIL DETAILS: 14km walk, 6 hours walking with breaks. Medium Grade.

FLEXIBLE WALKING: Again as we have two guides, we can offer a slower and faster group for this walk.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast, we head to the start of our walking trail. Our walk today is stunning from the get-go. Our walk will either do Mt Anne or Mt Wedge depending on the weather both are stunning walks. We reach the summit of Mt Wedge after ascending through magnificent, pristine rainforest and then a sub-alpine belt of pandanus, scoparia and heaths, before reaching the dolerite-boulder strewn gully which provides final access to the small summit plateau. The views from the top are sensational – the whole panorama of the southwest is before you, from the lakes below to Frenchmans Cap, the “ice-chewed” Arthur Range and Mt Anne, and even glimpses of the Southern Ocean beyond. On the return trip, if there is time, we will make a brief side-trip to the “Creepy Crawly” nature walk. Our accommodation for tonight is at Pedder Wilderness Lodge set on the waterfront of Lake Pedder. We enjoy dinner together in the restaurant served with Tasmania wine.

Day 3: The Florentine Valley & Florentine River Walk
Lake Pedder Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 1.5 hour transfer from our accommodation to start of the trail. Afternoon: 2 hour transfer from end of walk to accommodation.

TRAIL DETAILS: Walk 9kms. Easy grade.

TERRAIN: Natural trails, which can be uneven underfoot with obstacles such as fallen trees, exposed tree roots, mud and rocks.

WALK ITINERARY: Today we firstly explore the Lake Pedder Dam. It is an amazing man-made achievement in itself and gives a different view of the lake. There are so many great walks around Lake Pedder, one of them being the Twisted Sister Track. It is as good as rainforest gets and expect to not see another person. We stop for morning tea here and enjoy the serenity. Then head back to explore the Upper Florentine Valley, part of the South-West wilderness of Tasmania which is celebrated for its wet sclerophyll and temperate forests, and is one of the greatest temperate wilderness areas on Earth. After years of dispute and protest amid forestry industry staff and environmental groups, the Florentine River Regional Reserve adjoined the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area in June 2013 as UNESCO officially recognised the environmental and cultural values of the area. The lower canopy of the valley floor is dominated by an assortment of sassafras, leatherwood, ferns, mosses, lichens and outcropping limestone, whilst this curtain of green is pierced by the trunks of some of the tallest trees on earth. Threatened species, such as the Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle, the Spotted-Tail Quoll, and the White Goshawk, find important habitat in the old growth forests that are still left in the Upper Florentine Valley. Afterwards, we return to Hobart the end of a remarkable journey.

ARRIVAL TIME: We arrive in Hobart at approximately 6.00 – 7:00pm depending on the pace of the group.
