FLEXIBLE WALKING: Shorter walking options are available each day to better suit your fitness level, and enjoy every part of your walk.

ITINERARY: After breakfast, your private transfer will take you to the start of the Kunisaki Hantou Minemichi Long Trail. The route follows in the footsteps of the monks who practiced the asceticism of Rokugo Manzan. You will begin at the Kumano Magaibutsu, the oldest and largest stone cliff Buddha in Japan, and ascend to the Buddha on steps that are said to have been built by an Oni, or ogre.  Nestled within the forested mountains of the Kunisaki Peninsula, these impressive rock reliefs date back to the late Heian period (794-1185). The towering figures of Fudō Myōō and Dainichi Nyorai, carved directly into the cliff faces, exude an aura of ancient spirituality and serenity. This is just a taste of the folklore this area is littered with. You will continue along the trail through verdant forest valleys, walking across rice fields with beautiful shrines scattered throughout. Just before lunch, you will be transferred to the impressive Kozanji Temple, built at the end of the Heian period. This marks the end of the first section of the trail, but we will continue on to Fuki-ji Temple. Built in the eighth century, Fuki-ji Temple is the oldest wooden structure in Kyushu and a stunning National Treasure, situated deep within a mossy woodland forest. This will also serve as today’s finish line as we make our way back to the hotel for a lovely traditional Japanese dinner served with sake wine, beer or soft drink.

As you ascend, you’ll encounter Tateishi, an imposing 11-meter-tall rock protruding from the slope. Upon reaching the summit, breathtaking views of the green valleys below and forested hills, adorned with impressive rock formations, await you. Traversing the ridge, you’ll arrive at the nearly 2000-year-old stone circle, a renowned healing spot steeped in mystery and offering another splendid viewpoint.Descending into the valley below, we pause for a tasty bento box lunch. The lush valley reveals more shrines and temples, with notable landmarks including a stone carving of a cow and sections of stone stairs amidst the rocky terrain. Eventually, the trail leads to Reisenji Temple in the afternoon. It is said that the Buddhist monk Ninmon Bosatsu founded this temple in 718. Just outside the temple stands the region’s largest Buddha statue, marking the conclusion of our hike before your transfer back to the lovely Onsen hotel. After enjoying a delightful Japanese dinner, unwind in the hotel’s rejuvinating Onsen spa.

ITINERARY: Today, you’ll embark on the Kunisaki course towards Iwato-ji. After breakfast, you’ll be transferred with your guides to Saihoji no Sato, where today’s trail begins. Following a brief stretch past rice fields and lush forests, you’ll arrive at Ofuda Iwaya. These magnificent rock formations, towering up to 400 meters high, serve as a natural sanctuary for Buddhists, often hailed as one of Japan’s most impressive natural wonders. Within Ofuda Iwaya cave lies a weathered stone Buddha statue, expressing the area’s cultural significance. Descending from this point leads you into a peaceful valley with a charming farm town, before ascending once more to encounter further breathtaking rock formations. This area is adorned with more Buddhist shrines, including the Kyusento-ji Temple, once a pivotal temple of Rokugo Manzan. Here, you’ll discover the Tomb of the renowned Buddhist monk Ninmon Bosatsu, whose story you’ll delve deeper into during your visit. Continuing along the trail, you’ll encounter an ancient Buddhist training site atop a stone peak, offering some of the area’s most spectacular views. A short walk from here brings you to your final destination, Iwato-ji. Established in 1283, this site boasts one of the oldest Kunisaki-stone towers in the region and hosts an annual fire festival. During your visit, a local Sentouji priest will perform a special Gomadaki fire ceremony. After exploring the site’s stunning gardens, we’ll transfer back to Kazenosato for another delicious dinner served with Sake wine or beer.

Day 6: Walk Iwato-ji to Momjusen-ji Temple
8 Day Japan’s Kunisaki Spiritual Trail

WALK GRADE: Section k-2 – 9 km, medium grade, 600 metre elevation gain, 5-6 hours.

ITINERARY: After breakfast, you are brought back to Iwato-ji, where you concluded your walk the day before. Today, your journey begins with a flat section, passing by charming farmhouses and lush green rice fields, leading toward steep green hills adorned with stunning rock escarpments. As you traverse the valley, you’ll encounter the serene Iwato waterfall and beautiful Buddhist shrines, serving as historic waypoints before beginning the ascent. More shrines reveal themselves on the slopes, but what distinguishes this part of the walk are the incredible rock formations towering over the lush forest. The landscape here is unparalleled, providing a perfect setting to enjoy lunch amidst nature’s embrace. At the highest point of today’s walk, you’ll find the former Kuzuhara village, filled with fascinating history. From here, the trail mainly descends, unveiling more of the area’s natural splendour. At the foot of the hill, you’ll reach Monjusen-ji Temple, the main temple of Rokugo Manzan’s Suyama. As its name suggests, it worships Monju Bodhisattva. Within the temple precincts lies an eight-metre-tall stupa, said to be the largest in Japan, offering fantastic views of Mt. Monju Yaba. After the walk, we depart the mainland via a short transfer to the port of Kunisaki, where a scenic boat ride awaits to transport us back 50 years in time to the island of Himeshima. Himeshima boasts beautiful green hills, beaches, a charming town, numerous fish farms, and a traditional way of life. Tonight, after dinner, you’ll stay at Yachiyo-kan, a lovely boutique hotel on the island.

Day 7: Uncover Himeshima Island
8 Day Japan’s Kunisaki Spiritual Trail

WALK GRADE: 3km, hard grade, 2 hours.

Along the trail, glimpses of breathtaking views emerge through the forest, culminating at the summit, where panoramic vistas of the blue ocean and mainland mountains unveil themselves. After taking in the scenery, the descent awaits, followed by a return to the port for another scenic boat journey back to the mainland. Upon arrival, we transfer you to your amazing hotel for the night, where chefs will prepare an extra special dinner to mark your last night with us.
