What makes the Iseji so special?

Day 1: Arrive in Nagoya

GETTING THERE: Fly into either International Airports at Toyko or Osaka in Japan and connect by either Shinkansen (bullet train) or flights to Nagoya.

ITINERARY: Today is arrival day, upon arriving in Nagoya make your own way to Mitsui Garden Hotel Nagoya Premier, Nagoya. (Check-in from 3pm if you arrive earlier and reception can look after your luggage). The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the town at your own pace. Nagoya is renowned for its rich cultural heritage, modern attractions, and historical significance. You might like to explore Nagoya Castle, a magnificent fortress with beautiful gardens and a museum. The Atsuta Shrine, one of Japan’s oldest and most important Shinto shrines, offers a serene spiritual experience. For modern attractions, the futuristic SCMAGLEV and Railway Park showcases the evolution of Japanese trains. You can also enjoy vibrant shopping and dining in the Sakae district and experience local craftsmanship at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology. Nagoya blends tradition with innovation, offering a diverse array of experiences. Tonight is at leisure where you can choose to dine at the hotel or perhaps discover a local restaurant (own expense).

Day 2: Walk Ise Grand Shrine Kagura and Ise Ondo Dance Performance

MEETING DETAILS: Meet your guides in the foyer of the Mitsui Garden Nagoya Hotel Premier at 8.00am.

WALK GRADE: Short walks around the Ise Grand Shrine, 2-3 km, easy

ITINERARY: Enjoy breakfast before meeting your guides in the foyer of the hotel. From Nagoya, we enjoy a private transfer to the enchanting town of Ise Jingu. We take in the sights of Oharaimachi a kilometre stretch of quaint traditional style buildings which have been serving pilgrims and tourists for several centuries. Today we will immerse ourselves into the rich tapestry of Japanese culture as we visit the famous Ise Grand Shrine, the most sacred Shinto shrine, dedicated to the sun goddess Amaterasu. Renowned for its serene beauty and traditional Japanese architecture, the shrine is rebuilt every 20 years as part of a centuries-old ritual, symbolising the Shinto belief in the cyclical nature of life. Here, you will enjoy a traditional Kagura dance performance dedicated to the gods, offering a unique cultural experience. The Ise Ondo, characterised by its lively rhythm and communal spirit, allows you to immerse yourself in local customs. Since ancient times it has been performed at regional festivals to pray for a good harvest. Enjoy a lovely lunch at a local restaurant in Ise. Following the festivities, we head to our accommodation for the night at the Asakichi Ryokan Ise, an esteemed establishment dating back to the mid-1700s, nestled on a picturesque slope. Indulge in traditional Japanese hospitality, complete with authentic accommodations and multi course dinner, offering a genuine taste of local flavours amidst serene surroundings with Sake, beer or soft drink included. Tonight after dinner we learn how to perform the 17th century Ise Ondo Dance, a fun night of music and dance.

Day 3: Walk Magose Toge Pass

WALK GRADE: Magose Pass trail: 5.2 km. 3 hours walking with breaks. Easy to moderate grade. Total elevation gain: 365 metres.

ITINERARY: This morning enjoy a traditional breakfast, this morning we enjoy a sea purification at Futami Okitama Shrine before heading towards Magose. The walk begins with the famed Magose Toge Pass, where moss-covered cobblestone paths lead you through serene forests filled with ancient cedar and cypress trees. Along the way, you’ll encounter charming stone statues and small shrines, each telling a story of the area’s rich spiritual heritage. The trail offers breathtaking panoramic views of the ocean and majestic mountains, creating perfect spots to pause and take in the scenery. You’ll cross quaint wooden bridges over bubbling streams and hear the harmonious sounds of birdsong, deepening your connection with nature. This picturesque journey through lush landscapes and tranquil ambiance makes the hike an unforgettable experience. After your walk, indulge in authentic Japanese cuisine at Daikichi, a beloved local eatery owned by a Kumano Kudo guide, where delicious yakitori awaits in a warm and welcoming atmosphere infused with Japanese culture. After dinner, you will be transferred to your accommodation in Owase, where you can unwind before your journey commences along the famous Kumano trail. Afterwards we make our way to our accommodation tonight at the Hotel Viora. Tonight join the group for dinner in the restaurant served with Sake, beer or soft drink.

Day 4: Mount Yakiyama-Toge Pass Walk

WALK GRADE: Yakiyama-Toge Pass: 13.5 km. 6 hours of walking with breaks. moderate grade. Total elevation gain: 705 metres.

FLEXIBLE WALKING: Easier walking options are available today to suit all fitness levels.

ITINERARY: Begin your day with a delectable breakfast at the hotel before immersing yourself in the traditions of Koshinko, a folk religion focused on promoting goodness and warding off evil. Explore sacred rites and rituals with your guide, gaining insights into the rich heritage and profound wisdom of this ancient belief system. For today’s walk, we traverse the Yakiyama-toge Pass, a vital segment of the Iseji route. Discover the ancient Yakiyama Kojindo Shrine, meticulously restored by locals in 2019, showcasing the enduring influence of Shugendo. As you ascend Mount Yakiyama, the trail gradually morphs into undulating terrain, offering breathtaking panoramas of lush forests and the azure ocean beyond. Following a scenic lunch amidst nature’s embrace, the trail descends, concluding your hike. Later, unwind at Miki Sato Beach before boarding our private transfers to Hotel Nami in Kumano City. Nestled by the Kumano Nada Sea, the hotel beckons with expansive vistas and gracious hospitality, providing a tranquil haven amid coastal splendour. We make our way to our accommodation at Hotel Nami. Tonight join the group for dinner in the restaurant served with Sake, beer or soft drink.

Day 5: Walk Matsumoto-Toge Pass - Kamikura Jinja Shrine

WALK GRADE: Matsumoto Toge Pass: 5.7 km. 4 hours of walking with breaks. Easy grade. Total elevation gain: 150 metres. 

ITINERARY: Enjoy breakfast, before we experience Mandara Kumano with your guide, showcasing the rich history of the Kumano Kodo through traditional Japanese paintings. Today, we will walk the beloved Matsumoto-toge Pass, featuring cobblestone paths amidst bamboo groves and offering panoramic views of Shichiri-Mihama Beach, Japan’s longest sand and pebble expanse. This section of the Kumano is short but an absolute must-visit part of the pilgrimage. At the end of the trail, explore the ancient Hana-no-Iwaya Shrine, nestled within a 45-meter-high rock, epitomizing nature worship in modern-day Kumano. We will also visit Kamikura Jinja Shrine, a sacred site perched atop a steep hillside, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Renowned for its ancient history and the awe-inspiring rock where the gods are said to have descended, it provides a profound spiritual experience. After your morning walk, we will transition to lunch, followed by a delightful tasting of Tangerine Juice in Mihama town, celebrated for its perennial tangerine harvests. Following this unique experience, visit the charming Konouchi Shinto Shrine, radiating with serenity and grace. As the day comes to an end, you will be welcomed to the oceanside Yukai Resort, where you can unwind in the Onsen before enjoying an excellent dinner paired with your choice of sake or beer.

 

Day 6: Kumano Nachi Taisha Shrine and Seigantoji Temple

WALK GRADE: 6.4 km. easy grade. 4 hours of walking with breaks. Total elevation gain: 390 metres.

ITINERARY: Today, we begin with a visit to Fudarankusanji Temple. Following this enchanting tale, we embark on the final leg of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage, traversing serene forests and immersing ourselves in nature’s tranquility and the timeless beauty of the ancient path. Our journey leads us to the revered Nachi Taisha Shrine, a significant spiritual site deeply rooted in Shinto traditions. Located beside the majestic Nachi Great Falls, Japan’s tallest waterfall, this shrine has long been worshipped as a sacred embodiment of the Kumano deities. Its powerful cascade inspires awe and reverence. Next, we continue to the stunning Seigantoji Temple, an architectural marvel and the starting point of the Saigoku Kannon pilgrimage to the West. This temple, with its striking red pagoda set against the breathtaking backdrop of Nachi Falls, exemplifies the harmonious blend of Shinto and Buddhist beliefs, offering pilgrims a deeply spiritual and visually captivating experience. As the day draws to a close, we transfer to our accommodation tonight at the Shirahama Key Terrace Hotel Seamore. Tonight enjoy a final dinner prepared by our expert chefs, paired with your choice of sake or beer.

Day 7: Laughter Festival Experience

ITINERARY: After breakfast, we embark on the final experience of this tour. We make our way to Niu Jinja Shrine where we will encounter The Laughter Festival, a unique and enchanting celebration that has been a cherished tradition in the region for centuries. Originating from an ancient myth, the festival embodies the profound belief in the healing power and importance of laughter. Participants and spectators alike are enveloped in an atmosphere of joy and mirth, as the community comes together to share in the simple yet profound act of laughing. This festival, with its vibrant history and cultural significance, leaves a lasting impression on all who experience it, reminding us of the timeless value of laughter and its ability to uplift the human spirit. Lunch will be enjoy at the festival before we join our private transfer for the journey to Osaka where our tour concludes carrying a wealth of amazing memories.
