Day 1: Arrival Day Nagano
7 Day Japan’s Highlights of the Shinetsu Trail Walk

Guests will need to organise their own international flights to Japan. The best airport to fly into is Toyko. The Shinkansen (bullet train will connect you from Toyko Station to Nagano in  1 hour and 45 mins). Our Flights staff can organise your flights if you need assistance.

Itinerary: Welcome to Japan. Arrive any time today into the city of Nagano and make your way to the Dormy Inn (hotel check-in is from 3.00pm – but you can leave your bags with reception if you arrive earlier). The remainder of the day is yours to explore on your own. Nagano is in Japan’s mountainous Chubu region, it’s a city rich in natural beauty and history. Tonight meet your guides in the hotel restaurant at 7.00pm, where you can meet your fellow travellers over a superb dinner of local cuisine served with Sake wine or beer.

Day 2: Walk the pilgrimage trail in Togakushi

Walk Grade: 10kms. 5-6 hours. This walk is rated as moderate. The terrain includes a mix of some steep inclines and uneven paths, it requires a reasonable level of fitness.

Terrain: Diverse terrain through dense forests, ancient cedar groves, and mountainous landscapes. The path is a mix of well-trodden dirt trails, rocky sections and root-covered paths. the route includes ascents and descents.

Itinerary: We start our day with a hearty breakfast at Dormy Inn, where a delicious spread of Japanese and Western options awaits you. Afterwards, embark on a private transfer from the hotel to Togakushi. The scenic drive through the beautiful Japanese countryside will set the tone for an exciting day ahead. Upon arrival at Togakushi, we begin on our pilgrimage trail walk. This trail connects two sacred sites and offers a journey through spiritual and natural beauty. The trail begins at the lower Togakushi shrine, which serves as a gateway to the pilgrimage trail and leads us past five stunning shrines, including the famous Kagami Ike Pond, a serene spot surrounded by lush forests that adds a magical touch to our walk. Towards the end of the trail, we explore Okusha, the most sacred shrine of the five shrines, set in a tranquil forest clearing. After completing the pilgrimage trail, we make our way to the Togakushi Ninja Museum. Discover the secrets of the Ninja explore the exhibits and learn about the history and skills of these legendary warriors. Afterwards, we transfer to the charming Ryokan Sakaya Hotel in Nozawa Onsen for the next 4 nights due to its central location to all our walking trails. In the evening you will enjoy a relaxing dinner at the hotel savouring a delicious meal served with sake wine, beer or soft drinks. Unwind and enjoy the company of your fellow travellers as we recount the day’s highlights.

Day 3: Walk Mt Madarao and Mount Daimyojin

Walk Grade: 8.5kms. this walk is rated as challenging. Significant elevation gains require a steady pace and good hiking fitness.

Terrain: Diverse terrain of rocky paths, uneven terrain, densely forested areas, steep ascents, Mountain views and variable conditions.

Flexible walking: flexible walking options are available for today.

Itinerary: Enjoy breakfast at our hotel before setting out on today’s walk. This morning we have a short transfer to the trailhead, where we start our adventure. As we embark on the trail to Mount Madarao, we will find ourselves immersed in a serene forest, where the vibrant greens of the trees and the cool mountain air create a refreshing atmosphere. The ascent offers sweeping views of the surrounding peaks, while wildflowers and moss-covered rocks line the path. Upon reaching the summit, panoramic vistas of the distant mountains and valleys unfold before us, rewarding our efforts with a breathtaking view. Continuing to Mount Daimyojin, the trail meanders through tranquil woodlands and past bubbling streams, with moments of peaceful seclusion. The sense of untouched nature deepens as we approach Mount Daimyojin’s summit, where the landscape reveals jagged cliffs, distant peaks, and a sweeping view of the plains near Nagoya. Afterward our hike, we make our way to our accommodation for the evening at Ryokan Sakaya in Nozawa Onsen. Relax and unwind as you return to the comfort of your hotel.  The evening meals feature a selection of traditional Japanese dishes featuring the flavours of local cuisine.

Day 4: Beech Forest Walk, Numanohara wetlands

Walk Grade: 11.2kms. Rated easy to moderate. Suitable for most fitness levels.  The trail is mostly flat with gentle inclines.

Terrain:  The terrain is a mix of flat paths, boardwalk sections and forest paths. The trail is predominantly flat with soft, leaf-covered ground. In the Wetlands, the trail is enhanced by wooden boardwalks.

Flexible walking: flexible walking options are available for today.

Itinerary: We start the day with a traditional Japanese breakfast at Ryokan Sakaya. Afterwards, we transfer to the trailhead, where our walking adventures begins. Upon arrival, choose from various walking options, each offering a unique experience of the natural beauty surrounding Nozawa Onsen with its lush forests, tranquil wetlands, and serene waters of Ike Pond and Lake Nozomi. The Beech Forest Walk offers an enchanting journey through towering, ancient beech trees that form a vibrant green canopy overhead. Sunlight filters through the leaves, casting dappled light on the forest floor, which is dotted with ferns and wildflowers. Reaching the Numanohara wetlands, the vibrant greens and reflective waters create a striking contrast with the surrounding forest. Birdsong fills the air, and the wetlands’ tranquility offers a chance to observe diverse flora and fauna in their natural habitat. After our hike, we visit the Nozawa Onsen Distillery for an enriching session. Learn about the art of distillation in this picturesque setting, nestled among mountains and hot springs. Enjoy a guided tour where you’ll discover the meticulous process of crafting premium spirits using pure mountain water and local ingredients. Cap off your visit with a tasting session, savouring the distinct craftsmanship of the distillery. Afterwards, we return to Ryokan Sakaya for some well-deserved relaxation you may like to unwind in the comfort of your traditional Japanese room or perhaps enjoy a soak in the Onsen to rejuvenate. Tonight enjoy a delightful dinner at the Ryokan enjoying the rich flavours of the region in a warm and inviting atmosphere,

Day 5: Cedar Avenue to Kosuge Shrine Walk

Walk Grade: 6.5 kms. Rated as easy to moderate. Well-maintained track and mostly flat, making it suitable for walkers of all levels.

Terrain: Well-maintained with a mostly flat surface, consisting of compacted dirt and gravel in some areas, with occasional stone steps near the shrine. Slight incline on the approach Kosuge Shrine, but remains manageable.

Flexible walking: flexible walking options available for today

Itinerary: Enjoy breakfast at Ryokan Sakaya, a hearty and healthy start to your day. This morning we take a short transfer to Cedar Avenue where our walk begins to the Kosuge trail. This trail is surrounded by towering Cedar trees and rich natural landscapes. This scenic trail follows an ancient route used by pilgrims, providing insight into Japan’s history and spiritual traditions. On our way to the Kosuge Shrine we see different types of stones, each with its own historical element and meaning that tells a story. For those opting to extend the walk, we take the route passing over the Mount Kosuge peak where we are rewarded with panoramic vistas of the surrounding mountains and valleys. We eventually reach beautiful Hokuryuko lake, revealing shimmering waters surrounded by lush greenery. The peaceful reflections of the trees and sky in the lake’s surface offer a perfect spot to pause, take in the scenery, and soak in the tranquility of the natural world. After our walk we have some free time to relax before making our way to Kenmeji temple, a tranquil site steeped in history and culture. After exploring the temple, take part in an authentic experience of cooking Onsen Tamago (eggs slow cooked in hot spring water). This traditional Japanese delicacy is cooked using the natural heat of the onsen water, providing a unique and delicious experience. In the evening after a beautiful day, you’ll enjoy a kaiseki dinner at Ryokan Sakaya. This multi-course meal highlights seasonal and local ingredients, offering a true taste of Japanese cuisine.

Day 6: Shiga Highlands walk

Walk Grade: 10kms. Rated as moderate. Gradual elevation gain of about 200 metres.

Terrain: Variety of terrains, including well-maintained forest trails, wooden boardwalks over marshes, occasional gravel or dirt tracks and some uneven sections due to rocks and roots.

Flexible walking: flexible walking options for today

Itinerary: Enjoy breakfast this morning at Ryokan Sakaya, before we say farewell to the friendly staff and head out on our last walk. Today we transfer to the beautiful Shiga-Kogen Highlands, known for its stunning landscapes and picturesque hiking trails. The Shiga Highlands walk begins with a scenic chair lift ride, offering sweeping views of the lush highlands and distant mountains as you ascend to the trailhead. Once you start the 10km walk, you’ll be surrounded by a serene landscape of rolling hills, ancient forests, and a collection of 48 ponds. The ponds vary in size and character, some nestled in quiet groves, others opening up to expansive vistas of the highlands. The pristine waters and tranquil atmosphere provide a sense of peace as you traverse this unique natural wonderland. After our walk, we transfer back to our accommodation in Nagano the Dormy Inn. Tonight we enjoy dinner at the hotel, reminiscing about the wonderful adventures we have had along the way.

Day 7: Nagano - Brush Meditation

Itinerary: This morning enjoy breakfast at our hotel before heading out to explore the highlights of Nagano. We take a scenic walk-through Nagano, on your way to the Yubuku Shrine. Yubuku Shrine in Nagano is a serene, centuries-old sanctuary nestled among towering trees, where the traditional wooden torii gate and moss-covered stone paths evoke a deep sense of tranquillity and spiritual reverence. After visiting the shrine we arrive at Zenko-ji Temple to participate in the ancient practice of Shakyo Calligraphy bruch meditation. Engage the mindful Buddhist practice in the serene temple setting, fostering concentration and spiritual reflection. Afterwards we enjoy a final celebratory lunch in a local restaurant, where you can enjoy a variety of Japanese dishes such a soba noodles, tempura, or sushi, showcasing the region’s culinary delights. After lunch, we take a leisurely walk back to our hotel where our adventure concludes at approximately 2.00pm. The end of a wonderful Japanese walking adventure.
