Heron Island Swimming Adventure

Heron Island Ocean Swimming Adventure

5 Day Guided Ocean Swimming Adventure Featuring the Great Barrier Reef, Tropical Marine Life and Island Experiences

Our Heron Island Ocean Swimming Adventure takes you into the heart of one of the world’s most extraordinary marine environments. Located directly on the Great Barrier Reef and surrounded by protected Marine National Park waters, Heron Island offers the rare opportunity to swim amongst colourful coral gardens and an incredible diversity of tropical marine life. Each day brings a new guided ocean swimming experience in the warm, clear waters surrounding the island. Glide above spectacular coral gardens and schools of colourful tropical fish, with the chance to encounter green and loggerhead turtles, graceful manta rays, eagle rays, stingrays and dolphins along the way. With the reef beginning just metres from shore, every swim has the potential to deliver an unforgettable wildlife encounter.

Our carefully selected swims explore different areas around Heron Island and its surrounding reef, combining beautiful ocean swimming with the excitement of discovering what lies beneath. With experienced guides and boat support throughout, you can relax and enjoy swimming through this remarkable natural environment. What truly sets this journey apart is its flexibility. You don’t need to be an elite or competitive swimmer to join the adventure. Confident ocean swimmers can enjoy longer swim options, while those wanting a more relaxed experience can choose shorter swims or hop aboard the support boat when they’ve had enough. Non-swimming partners are also welcome, making this an ideal adventure for couples and friends who want to travel together while enjoying the island in their own way.

Beyond the swimming, there is plenty of time to embrace island life. Snorkel straight from the beach, explore the reef at low tide, wander sandy beaches, discover the island’s abundant birdlife or simply relax and soak up the spectacular Great Barrier Reef setting. It is this combination of guided ocean swimming, extraordinary marine encounters, flexible swimming and relaxed island experiences that makes Heron Island so much more than a traditional swimming holiday.

Know Before You Go

How good a swimmer do I need to be?

You don’t need to be an elite or competitive swimmer to join our Ocean Swimming Adventure. However, you should be a confident swimmer who is comfortable swimming in open water. Our swims are supported by experienced guides and a private boat, with different pace groups and flexible swim distances available on selected days. The emphasis is on enjoying the experience, not racing or keeping up with the fastest swimmer.

How far will we swim each day?

Daily swimming distances vary, with most days covering approximately 2–4 kms in total, often broken into two swims and you can opt out of one of the swims if your prefer. We have deliberately designed the itinerary with flexibility in mind. On all days you can choose a shorter swim and jump into the support boat at any time for a rest or complete just one of the day’s swims or take some time out of the water altogether.

Do I have to complete every swim?

No. This is an adventure holiday, not a swimming competition. While we recommend preparing for the distances shown in the itinerary, you are not expected to complete every kilometre. Our private support boat gives us flexibility, and on selected days there are shorter swim options or the opportunity to skip a swim and rejoin the group later.

What swimming pace do I need to maintain?

We cater for different swimming speeds and will establish comfortable pace groups at the beginning of the tour. Our first swim gives our guides the opportunity to see how everyone swims and organise the group accordingly. You can then settle into a pace that allows you to enjoy the incredible scenery above and below the water.

Is this tour suitable for someone new to ocean swimming?

You should already be a confident swimmer before joining the tour, but you do not need extensive ocean-swimming experience. This a wonderful destination for swimmers looking to experience a multi-day ocean swimming adventure. Some experience swimming outside a pool before your trip is recommended so that you are comfortable with waves, currents and changing sea conditions.

Will we see turtles?

Our swims take us across coral reefs and through bays where turtles and a wonderful variety of tropical marine life may be encountered. As with all wildlife experiences, sightings can never be guaranteed – which makes seeing one beneath you while swimming all the more special.

What happens if the weather or sea conditions aren't suitable?

Ocean swimming is always dependent on the conditions. Our itinerary is deliberately flexible, and our guides and local boat crew will assess the weather, tides, currents and sea conditions each day. Swim locations, distances and timings may be adjusted when necessary to provide the best and safest experience available on the day.

Do we have boat support while swimming?

Yes. One of the great features of this adventure is our private boat support. Our boat accompanies our swimming program and transports us between many of Koh Tao’s beautiful bays and swimming locations. On most days, we can board directly from our resort, reducing road transfers and giving us more time to enjoy the water.

Can my partner come if they don't swim?

Absolutely. This tour has been specifically designed so that swimmers and non-swimming partners can enjoy the holiday together. Non-swimmers can join selected boat trips, snorkel the reefs, kayak, enjoy yoga, explore Koh Tao or simply relax at our beautiful resort’s beaches and infinity pool. You can spend the holiday together without needing to do exactly the same activities every day.

Can non-swimmers join the boat?

Yes. Non-swimming partners and supporters can join the group on our private boat and enjoy the spectacular coastline, with opportunities to snorkel at selected locations. The exact arrangements may vary depending on the day’s swim, sea conditions and safety requirements.

What happens if I want a day off swimming?

That’s perfectly fine. You may decide that one morning you’d rather snorkel, join the boat without swimming, enjoy a yoga session, take out a kayak, book a spa treatment or simply relax beside the infinity pool. The flexibility of the itinerary is one of the things that makes this much more than simply a swimming trip.

How do I get to the start of the tour?

Guests should fly into Gladstone, Queensland the day before the tour begins. On Day 1, you’ll meet your guides and transfer together by ferry to Heron Island.

What should I bring for the swimming?

We recommend bringing at least two comfortable swimsuits, goggles plus a spare pair, swim cap, reef-safe sunscreen, rash vest or sun-protective swimwear, water bottle and a small day bag. A detailed packing list will be provided before departure so you know exactly what to bring.

Is this a competitive swimming tour?

Definitely not. Our swim adventure are about the experience of journeying through an extraordinary tropical island environment from the water. Some guests will swim faster, some slower and some will choose shorter distances. With flexible options, different pace groups, experienced guides and private boat support, the focus is on enjoying the reefs, marine life, beautiful coastline and sheer pleasure of swimming in warm tropical waters.

What is the water temperatures like?

In May the water temperature ranges from 19-23°C (66-73°F). At this time of the year Humpback Whales begin their northern migration.
In November the water Temperature: 24-26°C (75-79°F) • At the time of the year, Turtle egg-laying begins.
