Your 3 day walking holiday includes:
SUGGESTED PRE NIGHT ACCOMMODATION:The Langham Melbourne
DEPARTURE TIME: 7.30am
TRAIL NOTES: 8.6kms. 5 hours walking with breaks. Medium Grade.
TERRAIN: Formed walking track. Steps. Steady steep ascent. Total climb of 382m to Pinnacle Lookout. Beyond this, the track undulates with some short steep ascents and descents. Some uneven, rocky terrain to negotiate.
WALK ITINERARY: Meet your guide at 7.30am at The Langham Melbourne for transfers to The Grampians (approx 3 hours). Today’s walk takes us on the first section of the Grampians Peak Trail. The trail makes its way to Venus Baths naturally formed smooth rockpools which in the warmer months make this an enticing place to splash around and cool off before the steady climb ahead. After the ascent to Wonderland, the track makes a dramatic change. Marvel at the seemingly precariously perched boulders as you climb towards the Grand Canyon, a very much smaller version of the American icon but nonetheless an awe-inspiring experience walking through this sandstone chasm. Other features such as the “Cool Chamber” and “Bridal Veil Falls” along the way bring us to the unbelievably tall, narrow gorge that is Silent Street. After rains, water flows through the gorge alongside the narrow walking track, the sound of which adds to the unreal atmosphere of this incredible place. Finally, we reach one of the most spectacular vantage points in the Grampians National Park at the Pinnacle Lookout with its terrific views over Western Victoria. From here we transfer to our accommodation in Halls Gap. Relax and enjoy the stunning views of the mountains before we enjoy dinner in a local restaurant featuring local produce perfectly matched with superb regional wines. A wonderful way to finish the day.
TRAIL NOTES: 13.8kms. 5 to 6 hours walking. Medium Grade.
TERRAIN: Today’s walk starts with a steady ascent to Mt Rosea with nearly 400m elevation gain with an average angle of ascent at 23%. But, the descent is longer, although less steep, dropping 687m in elevation over the final 8.2km. Well formed walking trail but some sections of uneven rock and boulders.
WALK ITINERARY: This morning enjoy a hearty breakfast before we set out to walk the next section of the Grampians Peak trail. The track this morning starts mildly enough but we soon find ourselves traversing a very expansive, spectacular rocky landscape. This recently-constructed track has attended carefully to the needs and desires of walkers by searching out a clearly sculpted path through the sandstone escarpment. The stone steps and bridges occasionally look like the Romans may have had a hand in construction! Eventually, we reach a lookout on the edge of one of the highest peaks of the Grampians, Mt Rosea. Time must be spent here taking in the panoramic views and orientating oneself in this mighty scenery. It’s all downhill from here, mostly through the forest on carefully laid steps and graded tracks until we reach the Borough Huts Campground and a short return drive to Halls Gap to celebrate a great day on the trail. We return to our accommodation to relax before enjoy dinner served with regional wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 6.3kms. 3 hours. Grade 3. Medium.
TERRAIN: Track climbs steadily at first then flattens as it follows the escarpment before a final steeper ascent to the summit. Total climb of 494m. Can involve water crossings, slippery track surfaces, rock hopping and rock scrambling.
WALK ITINERARY: We enjoy breakfast before heading out on the last section of the trail to Mt Abrupt. This classic Grampians peak climb zig-zags its way initially up the east-facing slope of the Serra Range. At about halfway the track shifts to the ridgeline towards Mt Abrupt and showcases pastoral land of the Victoria Valley and further to the west. Again carefully constructed stonework assists us in achieving the summit of this highest peak in the Southern Grampians with the humble town of Dunkeld sitting quietly below. This is a most spectacular lookout and a viewpoint that warrants time to capture from above the full circumference of this ancient landscape. After our walk, we head to to the Royal Mail Hotel in Dunkeld for a wonderful celebratory lunch. From here we return to The Langham Melbourne the end of a wonderful journey.
