Many people flock to Byron Bay in northern NSW for its beautiful coastline, but Byron’s Hinterland region is just as impressive. Discover a magical landscape of ancient rainforests which form part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, the largest area of subtropical rainforest in the world. Wander through forests of massive Antarctic beech trees, delight in the dramatic cascading waterfalls of Nightcap National Park and Whian Whian State Conservation Area and see the stunning high country of Border Ranges National Park on this fantastic 3 day Pack-Free walking holiday.

Pack-Free walks are what we do. Many of us love walking but the thought of carrying a heavy pack on our back is daunting. Each of our walks have been designed so that you can walk freely with just a small day pack carrying your essential water and lunch making your walk an enjoyable care-free experience.

Ideally located near the National Park and Minyon Falls our accommodation for 2 nights is at the beautiful Nightcap Ridge Lodge. Set in the rainforest this stylish accommodation is surrounded by natural beauty.

Evening meals are a great time for the group to come together and enjoy each other’s company. Guests will enjoy dining each evening in the lodges featuring local produce. All evening meals will be accompanied by Australia wines.

DEPARTURE TIME: 7.30am
TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 2 hours transfer from Byron to the start your walk.
TRAIL NOTES: 12kms. 6 hours walking with breaks. Medium Grade. Shorter 8km walk available. Grade 4.
TERRAIN: Well formed dirt track with easy creek crossings. Obstacles include occasional mud, tree roots, rocks and wait-a-while vines!
WALK ITINERARY: Meet your guide at Byron Bay for transfers to the start of the walk. Today’s walk takes us to a high mountain plateau in the Border Ranges National Park. Explore an unspoilt wilderness area of ancient Antarctic beech trees overtaken by colourful lichen as well as massive hoop pines, helmholtzi lilies and pretty ferns. This track also features two spectacular waterfalls, the picturesque Evans Falls with its beautiful swimming hole below and Selva Falls which cascades over carpeted moss-covered boulders. Afterwards, we head to our accommodation at the charming Nightcap Ridge Lodge for the next two night set amongst the rainforest. Tonight enjoy dinner accompanied with Australian wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 18km. 6.5 hrs. Moderate to Hard. A shorter walk with our second guide can be offered for those not up to this track.
TERRAIN: Well formed dirt trail with some obstacles such as tree branches, rocks and roots. Steep sections as the trail climbs over a couple of mountains.
WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast at the lodge we head out for the day’s adventure. Today’s walk explore world heritage rainforest along the Historic Nightcap Walking trail. This area is the traditional lands of the Widjabal clan of the Bundjalung Nation which occupied this area over the past 4,000 years. This track also forms part of the old 1840s postman’s track, that ran between Lismore and Murwillumbah and was used by both postal workers and travellers alike. We explore a diverse landscape of wet sclerophyll forest and subtropical and warm temperate rainforests with native animal species thriving in these rainforests including the spotted-tailed quolls, pademelons and potoroos, as well as a variety of birdlife such as king parrots and Albert’s lyrebird. As the trail climb over mountain ranges, it offers spectacular views of the escarpment of Nightcap National Park, Mount Warning and the Tweed Caldera, a bowl-shaped depression caused by the collapse of a volcanic cone which erupted over 20 million years ago and is one of the largest calderas in the world. After our walk, we return to the Nightcap Lodge for a relaxing dinner served with Australian wines.
TRAIL NOTES: 13kms, 4 hours. Medium grade. Grade 3. Optional 3.7km walk after lunch to Cape Byron. Grade 3. Some short steep hills.
TERRAIN: Well formed natural trail with some obstacles including muddy sections, rocks, tree branches, vines. There is some creek rock hopping and some clambering at the big rocks at the bottom of the falls. There is a steep descent to the base of the falls and a steep climb out again with many steps.
TRANSFER TIMES: Morning 6-minute drive to start of the walk. Afternoon: 45-minute transfer to Byron Bay for celebratory lunch.
WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast at the lodge we head out for the day’s walking adventure. Another day awaits of stunning scenery as we walk through the beautiful Nightcap National Park rainforest, part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, the largest area of subtropical rainforest in the world. We meander through this rainforest wonderland as we make our way to magnificent Minyon Falls a 100m waterfall that plunges over the dramatic Nightcap escarpment. In springtime, look out for Peregrine Falcons, that often nest in the cliffs near the falls. An array of birdlife in the rainforest are also sure to delight and you may be lucky enough to see a satin bowerbird. Whilst the streams are home to a number of threatened frogs barking their charming chorus. After our walk we make our way back to Byron Bay for a celebratory lunch in a local establishment. For those spending the night in Byron Bay, after lunch enjoy an optional walk to Cape Byron. This 3.7km walk explore forests of bungalow palms, see impressive views from the clifftops to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Return to Byron Bay the end of a remarkable journey.
FINISH TIME: In Byron Bay at approximately 2.30pm after lunch. Or for those doing the optional Cape Byron walk finish at approximately 5.15pm.
