TRAIL NOTES: Minyon Falls Loop. 8kms. 4 hours walking with breaks. Medium Grade.

TERRAIN: Well formed natural trail with some obstacles including muddy sections, rocks, tree branches, vines. There is some creek rock hopping and some clambering at the big rocks at the bottom of the falls.  There is a steep descent to the base of the falls and a steep climb out again with many steps.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast at a local cafe, meet your guide in the foyer of your accommodation at 9am for transfers to the start of the walk. Today’s walk takes us to Nightcap National Park part of the World Heritage Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, the largest area of subtropical rainforest in the world. We meander through this rainforest wonderland as we make our way to magnificent Minyon Falls a 100m waterfall that plunges over the dramatic Nightcap escarpment. In springtime, look out for Peregrine Falcons, that often nest in the cliffs near the falls. An array of birdlife in the rainforest are also sure to delight and you may be lucky enough to see a satin bowerbird. Whilst the streams are home to a number of threatened frogs barking their charming chorus. On the way keep watch for the mystical lyrebird or a pademelon – one of our smallest macropods. Listen for the distinctive call of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo. Catch a glimpse of frogs, skinks, crayfish, tiny birds and lace monitors. These are just some of the wildlife you might see. Afterwards, we head to our accommodation at Byron Hinterland Villas for the next two nights. Tonight enjoy dinner accompanied with Australian wines.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast we head out for the day’s adventure. Today’s walk explore world heritage rainforest along the Historic Nightcap Walking trail. This area is the traditional lands of the Widjabal clan of the Bundjalung Nation which occupied this area over the past 4,000 years. This track also forms part of the old 1840s postman’s track, that ran between Lismore and Murwillumbah and was used by both postal workers and travellers alike. We explore a diverse landscape of wet sclerophyll forest and subtropical and warm temperate rainforests with native animal species thriving in these rainforests including the spotted-tailed quolls, pademelons and potoroos, as well as a variety of birdlife such as king parrots and Albert’s lyrebird. As the trail climb over mountain ranges, it offers spectacular views of the escarpment of Nightcap National Park, Mount Warning and the Tweed Caldera, a bowl-shaped depression caused by the collapse of a volcanic cone which erupted over 20 million years ago and is one of the largest calderas in the world.  Alternative day two walk. If the 19km  Nightcap Historic Track is a little too much walking for you. We suggest the Goonengerry National park loop walk. 10km along mostly fire trail through dry and wet sclerophyll black butt forests with a side track through rainforest to 2 waterfalls which overlook the Wanganui escarpment.
