Bungles, Lake Argyle & Beyond

This unique Kimberley pack-free walk encompasses two magnificent flights to reduce travelling time in the vast Kimberley saving you around 9 hours in driving. The 7-day innovative walk is like no other tour! Your journey has been designed to provide a remote wilderness walking experience in the Kimberley with added touches of luxury along the way! Enjoy Lake Argyle, located in the remote Kimberley region in the far north of Western Australia. The vast freshwater lake nestled amongst a rugged billion-year-old landscape is brimming with an abundance of wildlife and breath-taking colourful vistas. We also visit Home Valley Station and El Questro, located in the East Kimberleys for a few nights. This area showcases an outstanding diversity of landscapes from rugged sandstone ranges to rainforest pockets, stunning gorges and palm-fringed waterholes. A highlight of the Kimberley’s will be our flight into the stunning Bungles, saving 9 hours of driving and seeing the Kimberley’s in all their glory from up above. Once we land, we’ll change aircraft and experience heli-hiking into the remote Picaninny Gorge in the Purnululu National Park (a place which is only normally accessible on a 3-day hike with a heavy pack). Wonder at the amazing beehives domes as we wander through the gorge, a World Heritage Site and one of the most striking wonders of Western Australia.

A Pack Free Walking Experience

Carry as little as your water and lunch

One of the biggest drawcards of this walk is that our guests won’t be asked to carry their clothes, food or overnight bags for the entire walk. This is a big advantage in that you will avoid carrying an additional 8kg or more on your back. With Life’s An Adventure, you will carry as little as your water bottle, lunch and camera each day.

Scenic Flight into the Bungles

Save 9 hours of driving

To access the Bungle is normally a 9 hour return journey from Kununurra, with 3 of those hours on rough bumpy terrain. On this journey we want you to enjoy every minute of this special place, which is why we have included a return flight from Kununurra into the Bungles. The added bonus is you will see the Bungles and Purnululu National Park from the air and see the magnitude and grandeur of this spectacular region.

With OUR journey we will access this area in a day with our helicopter dropping us at the mouth of the gorge, allowing us the day to explore the best areas of this enormous gorge, that cuts through the Bungle Range. SUGGESTED PRE-TOUR ACCOMMODATION: Kimberley Grande Hotel

Today is an arrival day. Fly into Kununurra (own expense) with the rest of your day at leisure. Why not visit the local indigenous gallery or diamond shops that sell the rare Argyle Pink Diamonds. A good suggestion is to head out to the local Hoochery Gin Distillery for lunch and tastings. Taxis can be called to take you out there. Tonight join one of your guides for a welcome dinner in the Kimberley Grande Hotel Restaurant at 7.00pm served with wine to chat about the adventure ahead.

Day 2: Bungle Bungle Flight and Heli-Hike Experience
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRAIL NOTES: 10 km return hike. Requires a good level of fitness and mobility.

ITINERARY: This morning we are up early to fly directly down to explore the Bungle Bungles (flight included in the tour). We will depart Kununurra for a stunning flight taking in views on Argyle, the Carr Boyd Ranges and the Bungles on a small plane to Purnululu National Park. The luxury of us flying saves us around 9-hours of rugged road travel and allows us to enjoy a smooth, scenic flight to one of Australia’s World Heritage Sites. We will witness the beauty of the Bungles from above before landing at a nearyby airstrip to meet our helicopter that will fly us near the mouth of the remote Piccaninny Gorge, the largest of all the gorges in the National Park. Our guide will lead the hike into the gorge and share stories of the area’s significance to the Aboriginal people and its unique history, which led to the World Heritage listing of Purnululu National Park. We will enjoy a morning tea and picnic lunch here. To experience this area, would normally take 3 days hiking with overnight camping supplies in a heavy pack. (Including one day to reach the mouth of the gorge, then another day to explore the gorge and then another day to retrace your steps and hike back to the start). With OUR journey we will access this area in a day with our helicopter dropping us at the mouth of the gorge, allowing us the day to explore the best areas of this enormous gorge, that cuts through the Bungle Range. The helicopter will then pick us up for a unique return back to the local airstrip for us to meet our plane which will take us back to Kununurra. Tonight enjoy dinner with your guide in the hotel restaurant including wine.

Day 3: Kununurra to Lake Argyle
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRANSFERS: Transfer by boat to walk and accommodation

TRAIL NOTES: 5.3-kms. Grade: easy. 1 hour walk.

ITINERARY: This morning after breakfast we cruise to explore the Ord River where we can marvel at the spectacular scenery, wildlife, flora and fauna we’ll see along the way to Lake Argyle! We will stop at a Riverside Camp’s for a sumptuous buffet lunch, before continuing on up to the Ord Top Dam – an incredible sight! In 1971 the Ord River Dam was completed and Lake Argyle was filled by 1974. Lake Argyle is located in the remote Kimberley region in the far north of Western Australia. The vast freshwater lake nestled amongst a rugged billion-year-old landscape is brimming with an abundance of wildlife and breath-taking colourful vistas.

Once we’ve disembark off the cruise we will view the impressive Ord Dam before making our way to historic Durack Homestead. From here we begin our walk to Lake Argyle Bluff a 5.3-kilometre easy trail.  Look out for the interesting wildlife you may see along the way. Birds, marsupials, reptiles, insects and maybe even an Echidna! Once we’ve walked out to the lookout we head to our accommodation for the next two nights at Lake Argyle Resort which has been designed and constructed specifically for the stunning Kimberley landscape overlooking the lake. Enjoy the delights of this property including the stunning infinity pool! 35 metres of infinity wet edge, spa, and some of the most breath-taking scenery of the Kimberley’s. Tonight we’ll enjoy a hearty dinner in the restaurant, served with wine.

Day 4: Bird Watching, Gelly's Waterhole & Sunset Cruise
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRANSFERS: Transfer by private charter boat to walk

TRAIL NOTES: 3kms. Grade: Easy to Medium.

ITINERARY: This morning enjoy a hearty breakfast before we cruise across the lake on a private charter to take us to the start of our walk for the day. The boat will take us past many bays and inlets that make this vast body of water so incredibly unique. We may see wallabies, wallaroos, fish, an array of birdlife and freshwater crocs along the way. We will be dropped off where our walk begins. The walk to Gelly’s Waterhole, is 3km return. This walk is trackless and a unique opportunity to walk in the real Kimberley Wilderness. The walk is easy to medium in grade and ranges in terrain. Lake Argyle, a designated RAMSAR Wetland due to the large number and variety of birdlife found here, has gained a reputation as one of the best locations in Australia to observe certain bird species that are often difficult to find elsewhere. Over 240 species of birds have been recorded on or around the lake including Yellow Chat, Painted Snipe, the Long Toed Stint and Rainbow Bee-eaters!

After our walk, we’ll head back to Lake Argyle Resort (time permitting we may have a refreshing swim off the boat to cool off) for lunch and an afternoon dip in the stunning infinity pool taking in the beauty that surrounds us. Tonight enjoy dinner in the restaurant, served with wine.

Day 5: Lake Argyle to Amalia Gorge & El Questro
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRAIL NOTES: Amalia Gorge walk: 3.4kms. Approx 3-3.5hrs. Grade: moderately difficult.
El Questro Gorge: 3 kms. Approx 2 hours. Medium. Terrain: Some section rocky creek bed requiring good level of fitness & agility. Walking poles suggested.

ITINERARY: This morning we’ll drive out to El Questro in the Eastern Kimberley where we’ll walk both Amalia Gorge and a portion of El Questro Gorge. The drive will take around 2-hours. The Amalia Gorge walk, a return trek to the waterfall and plunge pool passes by several small flowing waterfalls and crystal clear pools, including a lovely half-way pool – the perfect place to enjoy a swim!  The beginning of the walk is over a rocky dry river bed, with some tough narrow areas of the trail, but the scenery is worth it. After this walk, we’ll head to El Questro Station for a sit-down lunch. This afternoon we’ll walk a portion of El Questro Gorge to the halfway pool. Our accommodation for the next two nights will be at Home Valley Station. Tonight enjoy dinner in the restaurant served with wine.

Day 6: Champagne Springs
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRAIL NOTES: 5kms. Grade: moderately difficult. Sections of the trail lead along a rocky riverbed with creek crossings

ITINERARY: This morning after breakfast we will walk to beautiful Champagne Springs named after the thermal springs that can be found at the end of this walk. This walk features sheer cliffs on the western and northern side that rise up to 375m and are mostly made up of ancient sandstone. The riverside trail is long and filled with uneven terrain, however, it is totally worth the walk as once you reach the top you’ll be rewarded with cooling pools, lush scenery and a cascading waterfall. At the end of the walk enjoy a dip in the beautiful freshwater pools surrounded by lush vegetation AND a much easier walk back down! Afterwards, we return to Home Valley for a delicious lunch. Later enjoy an optional shorter 1km walk to Bindoola Falls and billabong where you may want to have a swim. Tonight enjoy dinner served with wine.

Day 7: Emma Gorge Walk - Kununurra
7 Day Kimberley Explorer

TRAIL NOTES: Emma Gorge Walk: 3.5kms. Terrain: Rocky creek bed requiring good level of fitness & agility. Walking poles suggested. Enjoy a challenging, partially shaded, one hour walk. Moderately difficult with some rugged creek crossings.

ITINERARY: This morning enjoy an early breakfast and head to Emma Gorge for the last of our walking trails. Emma Gorge forms part of the Cockburn Ranges. This scenic trail takes us through a gorge characterised by cliff face escarpments reaching up to 120 metres high on both sides of the trail. See the ever-changing vegetation as you make your way along the gorge until you reach the crystal clear pools and a 65-metre waterfall. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the pools to cool off before heading back. After lunch, our journey takes us back to Kununurra, where our walking holidays concludes at approximately 2.45pm. Please note as airlines can change departure times, we will adjust the start time on day 5 to ensure guests can meet flights departing late afternoon. We are able to drop guests directly at the airport to catch outgoing flights.

We hope you enjoyed your fabulous journey.

Due to warmer weather in the early morning starts will mean we will walk in the cooler part of the day. Some days include several short walks. Most walks include a swim to cool off during the walks.  All walks outlined above are subject to them being open. When walks are not opened alternative walks or activities will be substituted.
