A Guided 7 day Pack-Free walk

This fantastic 7 day guided pack free walk showcases some of Western Australia’s most popular and picturesque walks between Albany and Esperance taking in stunning national parks, white sandy beaches, and incredible walking trails. We’ll explore Fitzgerald River and Cape Le Grand National Parks including Frenchman’s Peak which is thought to have formed by wave action and underwater currents during a period some 40 million years ago!

This walk takes in some of Australia’s most magnificent coastline with giant granite boulders, stunning beaches and magnificent coastal views! We may even see some local kangaroos jumping along the shoreline at Lucky Bay!

We end this fabulous journey with a helicopter flight over to Woody Island for an overnight stay. The island is rich in history and one of the 105 islands in the Recherche Archipelago located just 15km off the coast of Esperance, Western Australia.

The Dog Rock Motel is located in the heart of Albany’s historic and cultural district, and across from the famous local landmark, the natural granite Dog Rock. Hopetoun Motel & Chalet Village is in the centre of town, only 2 minutes’ walk to cafes, restaurants and the beach. Fitzgerald River National Park, just a 10-minute drive away is one of Australia’s most diverse and stunning national parks.

On our overnight stay on Woody Island we’ll stay in safari huts and wake up to the sounds of nature.

After our nights stay and before heading back by boat to Esperance enjoy a delicious morning tea on the deck of the Visitor’s Centre. You can then join a guide on a tour of Woody Island’s walk trails. Learn about the history, while discovering the local wildlife on this unique Nature Reserve. Or relax and swim while watching the bay for dolphins.

Day 1: Arrival day into Albany
7 Day Albany to Esperance Explorer Walk

ITINERARY: Today is an arrival day. Book your own flight to arrive any time into Albany and make your own way to the Dog Rock Motel, located in the heart of Albany’s historic and cultural district, and across from the famous local landmark, the natural granite Dog Rock. Tonight meet your guides in the on-site restaurant Lime303 at 6:30pm to enjoy a lovely dinner served with wine.

Day 2: Albany - East Mt Barren Walk - Hopetoun
7 Day Albany to Esperance Explorer Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 4hours transfer from the accommodation to the start of your walk near Hopetoun. Afternoon: 15-minute transfer from the end of the trail to -our accommodation.

TRAIL DETAILS: 3kms. 1.5hours with breaks. Medium walk.

TERRAIN: There’s a bit of shale to negotiate and a bit of a boulder scramble to get to the summit.

WALK ITINERARY: Enjoy a hearty breakfast before setting out from our accommodation to Hopetoun to start our walk in Fitzgerald National Park. Today’s walk is a return walk to the summit of at East Mount Barren with spectacular views. The trail up is a short and moderately difficult but worth the hike with impressive views from the summit over Culham Inlet, the Eyre Range, Hamersley Inlet and the peaks of mid Mt Barren and Thumb Peak. At the base of the peak there are eucalypts, myrtles, banksias and pea flowers. Mountain banksia, and the bright red Barrens regelia attract honeyeaters while honey possums search out more discrete flowers closer to the ground. Barrens clawflower, trigger plants and jugflowers appear higher up the trail. Afterwards we’ll drive to nearby Hopetoun to our accommodation for the next two nights at Hopetoun Motel and Chalet for a bit of downtime before we head to a local restaurant  to enjoy dinner accompanied by wine.

Please note guests are able to opt out of any day’s walking and remain with our logistics guide to do sightseeing (or at the accommodation)

Day 3: Hakea Trail, Fitzgerald National Park
7 Day Albany to Esperance Explorer Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 30-minute transfer from Hopetoun to the start of your walk. Afternoon: 20-minute transfer from the end of the trail to our accommodation.

TRAIL DETAILS: 13kms. 6-hours with breaks. Medium to Hard walk.

TERRAIN: A mix of moderately steep descents and ascents, with more gentle sections and some flat beach walking.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast, we transfer to the start of our walk in the East Fitzgerald National Park. The Hakea Trail – named after the iconic wildflower – the Royal Hakea (Hakea Victoria) which can be seen growing along many parts of the trail, is considered by many visitors as one of the best remote hiking trails in Western Australia. We will walk 13kms of this spectacular and rugged coastal walk with 360 degree views along the way of the central peaks and western coastline. Afterwards, enjoy a short transfer back to our accommodation in Hopetoun before dinner at a local restaurant including wines.

Day 4: Hopetoun - Rossiter Bay to Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park - Esperance

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 3.5hours transfer from the accommodation to the start of your walk. Afternoon: 10-minutes transfer from end of walk to accommodation in Esperance.

TRAIL DETAILS: 7kms. 3 hours with break. Medium Grade.

TERRAIN: A mix of moderately steep descents and ascents, with more gentle sections and some flat beach walking.

WALK ITINERARY: Enjoy a hearty breakfast before we drive towards Esperance to walk part of the Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail. We’ll start our walk at Rossiter Bay in Cape Le Grand National Park walking along this long beach, up and over the first ridge with vast expanses of Lucky Bay below. The bright white sand is so fine that it squeaks when you walk. Option to swim if you fancy a dip! Look out for kangaroos basking on pristine white beaches, dolphins surfing the aqua waters and amazing view. Option to continue walking from Lucky Bay to Thistle Cove or transfer the short distance to our accommodation for the next 2 nights in Esperance at the Esperance Island View Apartments. After some downtime we head to Lucky Bay Brewery for dinner and drinks.

Day 5: Cape Le Grand Beach to Thistle Cove, Cape Le Grand National Park

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 30-minute transfer from our accommodation to the trail. Afternoon: 1-hour transfer from our the end of our walk to the accommodation.

TRACK DETAILS: 9kms. 6 hours with breaks. Hard walk.

TERRAIN: The coastal trail has some short but challenging hills (both up and down), but the views are worth it!

WALK ITINERARY: Wake up and enjoy breakfast before we head to enjoy more of the Cape Le Grand Coastal Trail from Le Grand Beach to Thistle Cove. Todays walk has some challenging hills both up and downhill, but the views are worth it! On approach to the isolated beach of Little Hellfire Bay, you are beckoned for a swim by this extraordinary panorama. Option to swim if you fancy a dip! Again look out for kangaroos basking on pristine white beaches and dolphins. At Thistle Cove we’ll transfer back to Esperance before dinner at a local restaurant served with wine.

Day 6: Frenchmans Peak, Cape Le Grand National Park - Woody Island

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 45-minute transfer from accommodation to the trail. Afternoon: 45-minute transfer from the end of our walk to Esperance Heli-pad to join our short helicopter flight to Woody Island.

TRACK DETAILS: 3kms return. 2-3 hours with breaks. Hard walk.

TERRAIN: Steep sections to reach the summit and back with sections of granite. We’ll take it slow as the views are worth it!

WALK ITINERARY: Enjoy breakfast before we head out. Today we’ll complete another section of the coastal trail and walk up Frenchman’s Peak, named by surveyor Alexander Forrest during an expedition in search of good country for pasture in 1870. The peak’s shape was thought to resemble the hats worn by French troops in the 1800s. We will walk slow and steady to reach the peak of this remarkable mountain with outstanding views over the coast! A large cave near the summit is thought to have formed by wave action and underwater currents during a period some 40 million years ago when sea levels were at least 300m above their current level and the peaks of Cape Le Grand were largely submerged. The Aboriginal name for the peak is Mandooboornup and it is an important place in local Aboriginal culture. Afterwards, we’ll drive back to Esperance to enjoy a short helicopter flight over to Woody Island, seeing the turquoise coast from above! Once on the island, enjoy free time where you may choose to discover the local flora on the walking tracks with your guide or go snorkelling! Tonight enjoy dinner and wine at the island restaurant.

Day 7: Woody Island - Esperance
7 Day Albany to Esperance Explorer Walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Afternoon: 40-minute boat transfer from Woody Island to Esperance.

ITINERARY: Enjoy breakfast and a leisurely morning enjoying either free time where you may choose to discover the local flora on the walking tracks with your guide or go snorkelling! After lunch at the island restaurant we’ll catch the ferry back to Esperance where our tour ends.

ARRIVAL TIME: We will arrive back to Esperance at approximately 2pm. Note: if you are planning to fly out this day please do not book a flight before 4pm. For those wishing to stay in Esperance contact the hotel directly to book accommodation for the night.

Additional Information

  • Prices are per person in Australian dollars and include GST.
  • A deposit of $300 per person is required to secure your booking. (unless taking advantage of Earlybird or Spot Specials in which full payment is required at time of booking).
