6 Day Lord Howe Island walk

Lord Howe Island

A Pack Free guided 6-day walk

Located in the Tasman Sea between Australia and New Zealand lies the island paradise of Lord Howe Island. The Lord Howe Island Group is made up of 28 islands and islets, with remarkable volcanic geography that has been eroded by the sea over millions of years. As such it is a World Heritage Site of global natural significance. A majority of the island is a virtually untouched forest, rich in flora and fauna and some of the world’s best hiking trails.

Discover this exceptional natural beauty of this island paradise in depth, as our walks showcase the stunning cliff top views, volcanic mountains, lush forests, pristine beaches, and a beautiful 6km coral reef that forms a lagoon teeming with marine life. This island is a bird lovers paradise with over 200 different species recorded on the island and many rare species of flora and fauna found nowhere else on earth.

Pack-Free walk

Lord Howe Island

One of the biggest drawcards of this tour is that our guests won’t be asked to carry their clothes or overnight bags for the entire tour, this is a Pack Free Walk. This is a big advantage for our guests, in that you will avoid carrying an additional 8kg or more on your back. With Life’s An Adventure, you will carry as little as your water bottle, camera, lunch and hat each day!

Explore the coral reef

The Wow Factor

On one of our special days we start our day with a glass-bottom boat cruise. The coral surrounding the island has formed a natural lagoon making it a haven for colourful fish and turtles. On the way, we stop for a snorkel and swim with wetsuits, snorkel and flippers provided. From here our boat arrives at North Beach where we enjoy a hike to Mount Eliza 147m above sea level. Mt Eliza is one of the main nesting sites for the Red-tailed Tropicbird and the Sooty Tern.

Mt Gower

For those who prefer not to join the main walk today, there’s an option to embark on an alternative route encompassing Transit Hill, Valley of the Shadow, and Middle Beach Trail. Spend the rest of the day relaxing and discovering the surroundings. Easy Grade. 5km. 1.5 hours.

For those up to the challenge, we will hike to the summit of Mt Gower, rated as one of Australia’s best day walks. The hike is one of the highlights of Lord Howe Island and although this is a full 8.5 – 9-hour walk, once at the top the view is simply out of this world and worth every step.  You’ll feel a huge sense of achievement making it the top where you’ll experience an amazing misty cloud forest wonderland, with everything covered in pretty mosses and stunning views of the crystal clear waters of the lagoon below. At the breeding time during the year, Providence Petrels can be seen in their tens of thousands flying everywhere and dropping through the tree canopy to your guide’s calls. Note some sections of this walk are steep and require the use of anchored ropes for ascents and descents. You will need to be physically fit to do this walk. It is approximately 10 km with an elevation of 875 metres. Grade 5.

Note there is the option to stop at the saddle walking to around 500 metres and wait for the group to return from the summit. The walk up to this point has only a four to five areas where ropes are required. The saddle has amazing views over Mount Lidgbird. Hard Grade. 6kms

Tonight we will all join up to talk about our day’s adventures over another superb dinner.

Please note: The Mt Gower walk may be moved to day 2 of the itinerary due to the availability of the local guide.

From here we can view the entire Lord Howe Island lagoon with its spectacular shades of aqua, and views of two of the most dramatic mountains in Australia. To the north, you will see thousands of seabirds nesting in the cliff caves. We continue on to breathtaking Kim’s Lookout you’ll enjoy wonderful views, to the south over Old Settlement Beach, to the West views of Mt Eliza and the northeast to Admiralty Island.
