TRACK DETAILS: 4kms. 2.5 hours with breaks on the Castle Rock Walk. Medium/Difficult grade. 5km Nancy’s Peak Circuit. 3-4hours. Medium Grade.

WALK ITINERARY: This morning enjoy breakfast at nearby café at Middleton Beach before being transferred to the Castle Rock Trail in Porongurup National Park. The trail begins at the Castle Rock picnic spot and climbs through jarrah, marri, and karri forest to the base of Castle Rock and the lower lookout. A steeper and more difficult ascent, which includes scrambling over rocks and scaling a 6m ladder, leads to the Granite Skywalk, an incredible steel structure that winds its way around the massive granite dome, providing panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Well worth the climb for the stunning views! After our walkers lunch we will continue on to Nancy’s Peak Circuit. A walk in a granite landscape that traverses the major peak in the Porongurup Ranges, 23 kilometres from Mount Barker. The views are spectacular, with the Stirling Ranges visible to the north and the Southern Ocean visible on a clear day, in addition to the grandeur of the moss-covered granite boulders and lush vegetation. After both of these incredible walks we will head to Kendenup Lodge and Cottages, our accommodation for the next 3 nights, where we’ll enjoy a delicious meal surrounded by breathtaking views of the Stirling Ranges. This walk will take us around 4-5 hours including tea break and lunch. Starting at the Bluff Knoll car park’s southern end, the walk descends to a creek before ascending to a mountain saddle with spectacular views over the ridge to the south coast. WALK ITINERARY: After a hearty breakfast we’ll drive to the start of our first walk today at Mt Hassell, another fabulous walk in the Stirling Ranges. The trail up Mt Hassell has fewer steps than some of the other peaks, beginning gently and then followed by steeper sections of scree. At a height of 700 metres there is a large flat rock, beyond which the trail becomes steeper and requires some rock scrambling. Ripple marks can be seen on the rocks on Mt Hassell, evidence that the ranges were once covered by a shallow sea. As with all of the peaks in the Stirling Ranges, wildlfowers are to be seen most of the year. After our walkers lunch we drive a short distance to Talyuberlup trailhead Walk, the most dramatic rocky peak in the Stirling Ranges. Whilst only 783 metres high, it has been described as having a castle-like summit. The trail firstly winds through an area of low woodland and further on rises steeply up a gully before it heads for the base of the cliffs and then along a cliff line. It enters a large cave underneath the summit, from where you emerge onto the peak of Talyuberlup. Another day of spectacular vistas and incredible walks we’ll head back to Kendenup Lodge and Cottages for our final night and enjoy dinner whilst reminiscing about our experiences.

Day 5: Mt Trio and back to Perth
5 Day Stirling Ranges walk

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 45-minute transfer from accommodation to Mt Trio. Lunch: 1.5-hours transfer from Mt Trio to Black Cockatoo café at The Kodja Place, Kojonup. Afternoon: Drive: 3-hours transfer from Kojonup to Perth.

TERRAIN: This is a short and steep hike has a total ascent of 400 metres and lots of steps along the way.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast, we’ll drive to our final walk of this fantastic journey at Mt Trio. Mt Trio, as the name suggests, comprises of three peaks where the walk firstly climbs steeply from the parking area to a saddle between the east peak and the north peak. Further on it becomes more gentle towards the highest (northern) point at 856 metres where there are excellent views from the top when the weather is clear. Apart from many other wildflowers Mt Trio is known for its bright red mountain bell, Darwinia lejostyla. After enjoying this fabulous walk we’ll drive to Kojonup where we will have a celebratory lunch at Black Cockatoo café at The Kodja Place, Kojonup. The Kodja Place is a visitor and cultural centre that tells the inside story of Australian country life from Kojonup’s Noongar-Aboriginal and settler cultures.
