Three Capes vs Bay of Fires – Which Walk is Right for You
Two of our most popular Tasmanian tours are the 3-day Three Capes Track and the 3-day Bay of Fires pack-free guided walks.
Both are perfect for a long weekend, showcase some of the island’s most spectacular scenery, and include exceptional food and wine experiences—but which one suits you best?
Starting in the north-east, the Bay of Fires walk takes you along Tasmania’s pristine east coast, a landscape of white sandy beaches and striking orange granite boulders set against shimmering sapphire waters.
Much of the walk is over soft sand, with some sections of rock-hopping, allowing you to explore the iconic lichen-covered granite formations. Lightweight footwear, such as trainers, works best, and you can even walk barefoot along the sand when you wish. Soft sand walking can be a good workout for your calves, so a thorough stretch at the end of each day is recommended.
Accommodation is waterfront at Anson Bay, where you can choose between indoor and outdoor dining and enjoy the spa to soothe tired muscles. The walk concludes with a visit to Pyengana Dairy Farm, where you can discover the cheese-making process, sample award-winning cheeses, and enjoy farm-fresh meals at the Pyengana Farmgate Café, surrounded by lush dairy pastures.
In the south, the Three Capes Track, located on the Tasman Peninsula, offers dramatic coastal scenery, including Australia’s highest vertical sea cliffs and towering sea stacks. The trail is mostly dirt tracks and steps, with one day featuring a particularly steep climb, so more supportive, rugged footwear is advisable.
Accommodation is in Deluxe Spa Chalets at Stewart Bay Lodge near Port Arthur. As an added bonus, you can choose between a breathtaking helicopter flight over the coastline or a thrilling wilderness cruise around Cape Pillar.
Whether it’s the tranquil east coast or the dramatic southern cliffs, both walks promise unforgettable Tasmanian landscapes, incredible food, and a chance to truly unwind.
