The Michinoku Coastal Trail is a walk to remember

Japan’s Michinoku Coastal Trail has shown how hiking tourism can support earthquake recovery.

A scenic coastal view with rugged cliffs and rocky formations extending into the blue ocean, perfect for walking tours. Pine trees frame the foreground, while the cliffs are lush with greenery. The clear sky enhances the serene and natural beauty of the landscape.

It was originally established as an integral part of the “Green Reconstruction Project” following the devastating Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami that struck in 2011. The project’s primary goal was to help revitalise the coastal communities in the Tohoku region, which were deeply affected by the disaster. By promoting tourism and creating a meaningful connection between nature, local lifestyles, and the traces left behind by the disaster, the initiative aimed to breathe new life into the region and support its recovery.

Tragically, the earthquake and tsunami claimed the lives of around 16,000 individuals, leaving families, communities, and entire towns shattered. This walk was organised to honour those lost, remembering their lives and the communities they were part of, and to contribute to the ongoing process of rebuilding and recovering the affected areas. If there was ever a walk to undertake that would make a real and positive impact on a region in need, this is certainly it. Through this endeavour, participants not only pay tribute to the victims, but also help to support the region’s resilience, fostering hope and strength for the future. The connection between the walk and the recovery process serves as a testament to the enduring spirit of the people of Tohoku, and a reminder of the importance of collective efforts in the face of such overwhelming tragedy.

A scenic coastal landscape with a traditional Japanese building atop a rocky hill, surrounded by ocean waves, awaits discovery on Walking Tours in Japan. A sandy beach and a red torii gate stand gracefully under a partly cloudy sky, inviting exploration and awe.
