Purnunulu NP – Australia’s best kept secret!
Purnululu National Park offers some of the most striking geological landmarks in Western Australia in a remote wilderness experience.
And Life’s An Adventure can show you a lot of it on their five-day Kimberley, Bungles and Beyond pack-free guided walk.
Highlights include Cathedral Gorge with its amazing natural acoustics and Echidna Chasm – a gorge with a spectacularly long, narrow chasm. It has striking colour variations, depending on the angle of the sun beaming into it, with livistonia palms waving from the 200m high ridges above.
However, the most striking feature is the Bungle Bungle range, famous for its sandstone domes, visually striking with their striping in alternating orange and grey bands. The banding is due to differences in clay content and porosity of the sandstone layers.
Now, to see the Bungle Bungles you can either take a 20-minute scenic flight or spend three days walking into the range, however, Great Walks was part of the first commercial tour to helicopter right into the Bungle Bungles and get dropped off in Picaninny Gorge.
We then spent a day hiking this amazing gorge which involved walking on soft sand, dried creek bed and a bit of rock-hopping thrown in for good measure.
There were was so many “Wow!” moments we lost count. The pictures in this gallery will give you an idea – but they do not do justice to the raw and timeless beauty of the Bungle Bungles.
Each night we went back to our excellent accommodation at Bungle Bungle Savannah Lodge for great meals and cold drinks.
Life’s An Adventure’s 5-day Kimberley walking tour is unique and ideal for people who only want to spend a week exploring this gorgeous part of WA – or if you have the time you could tack on a trip to Kakadu, Broome or beyond!
