Our new Japan walk is poetry in motion!
Continuing our expansion into Japan our latest tour is the 7-day Basho Tohoku pack-free guided walk.
Follow in the footsteps of Japan’s most famous poet Matsuo Basho (1644-1694). A master of those traditional 3-line, 17 syllable haiku’s you learnt at school, Basho was well travelled and loved to write about his adventures.
Basho’s renowned poetic travelogue, Narrow Road to the North, stands as one of the masterpieces of Japanese literature, capturing the beauty and depth of Japan’s landscapes. On this immersive tour, you’ll have the chance to truly live his words, exploring the same serene paths he once walked. The journey takes you along peaceful country lanes, forested trails, and scenic mountain footpaths, offering a tranquil experience ideal for regular walkers who appreciate both nature and literary history. This is more than just a walk; it’s a journey into Japan’s cultural and natural heritage, blending the beauty of the landscape with the spirit of Basho’s poetry. Whether you’re a literature enthusiast or simply looking for an enriching adventure, this tour provides an unforgettable experience that resonates with Basho’s profound reflections on life, nature, and travel.
Like Basho, we draw deep inspiration and joy from Japan’s breathtaking scenery, immersing ourselves in landscapes that have enchanted travelers and poets for centuries. This tour allows you to experience some of Japan’s most celebrated sights, including Matsushima, renowned as one of the country’s classic Three Views. Here, pine-covered islands set against tranquil waters create a scene of natural beauty that captivates the soul. Each destination on this journey offers an extraordinary blend of cultural richness and scenic wonder, inviting reflection and awe. From forested mountains to peaceful coastal vistas, we follow in Basho’s footsteps, connecting with the landscapes that moved him so deeply. This is more than just a scenic journey; it’s a pilgrimage through some of Japan’s most cherished sites, each steeped in history and beauty, inviting you to find your own moments of peace and inspiration in the natural artistry of Japan.
A highlight on day two is walking the Miyagi Olle Trail with its mix of forested trails, rolling hills and coastal paths. Other walks include a day exploring Hiraizumi World UNESCO Heritage area with forest trails straight out of a poem!
And it’s not a Life’s An Adventure Japan tour without an onsen (natural thermal pool) or two thrown in, and the Naruko Onsen on day three will sort out all those aches and pains. Day five includes walking the spectacular Natagiri Pass Mountain Trail and taking a cruise on the Mogami River. Socialise with us on Facebook
And as usual we have chosen the best accommodation, plenty of cultural experiences and many opportunities to try some fantastic Japanese food. We’re pretty certain this is the tour that will get your creative juices flowing. Speaking of which here’s a modern haiku just for you:
