Nakasendo walk receives glowing praise

Rosemary G has just returned from our 8-day Nakasendo pack-free guided walk in Japan and she praised it for its organisation, uniqueness and authenticity.

A group of older adults on a delightful walking holiday poses together in a garden, adorned in colorful kimonos. Nine women and two men smile warmly at the camera, framed by lush plants and a traditional wooden building.

The walk exceeded all my expectations! Our guide Danny was the driving force behind the tour, always ensuring everything ran smoothly and making the experience unforgettable. He worked seamlessly with our wonderful local guide, Kiyomi, whose knowledge of the area added so much depth to the journey. And let’s not forget Sun, our fantastic driver, who made all our transfers comfortable and stress-free. Together, they created the perfect team, making this adventure one for the books!

Their planning, along with any necessary adjustments to the schedule, was seamless, ensuring a smooth and enjoyable journey. Every detail was taken care of, creating a safe and well-organised experience that allowed us to relax and fully immerse ourselves in the adventure. It was clear that every decision was made with the guests’ comfort and safety in mind, making this trip not just memorable, but truly stress-free.

Out of our group of nine, six were in their late 60s or early 70s, but the guides paced us perfectly, ensuring everyone stayed comfortable and engaged. The walk itself was absolutely glorious, taking us through a variety of stunning terrains, from lush valleys to scenic hillsides. Along the way, there was plenty of laughter and fun, with moments of shared joy that made the experience even more special. It was a perfect blend of adventure, relaxation, and camaraderie.

Danny’s morning tea, with the billy boiled over an open flame, was always a delightful treat to start the day. The lunches were delicious and kept us well-fuelled throughout the journey. The accommodation was fabulous, each place offering a unique experience. Our two nights at Ichikawa Inn were a highlight, providing a perfect initiation into Japanese culture. The family-run business went above and beyond, treating us with such warmth and enthusiasm, making us feel like part of the family. It was truly a memorable experience!

A traditional Japanese meal set awaits after a day of walking holidays, featuring raw meat, greens, a bowl of broth, small plates with sauces and side dishes, a steaming pot, a hot towel, and a cup of tea. The menu card titled "Today's Course Dinner" hints at culinary delights to come.

The accommodation was absolutely fabulous, and I loved the variety throughout the journey. Each place had its own charm, but the last night, in particular, stood out as my favourite. The unique architecture and the philosophy behind it were an extraordinary experience, offering a deep sense of peace and connection. It was the perfect finale to a wonderful week — a truly memorable way to end an unforgettable adventure!

It goes without saying that the food throughout the journey was absolutely fabulous. Each meal was not only delicious but also beautifully presented, offering a wonderful insight into Japanese culture. The attention to detail in the presentation reflected the deep respect for food and tradition in Japan, making every meal an experience in itself. It truly enhanced the overall cultural immersion and was a highlight of the trip!

Overall, this was a fabulous walk (and we have done many around the world and in Australia). The company was recommended by a friend. She had said that it was the extra experiences added into the walk that set it apart and I couldn’t agree more.

I loved our printmaking session and sake brewery tasting! And of course, it was an unexpected bonus getting to meet and spend a couple of days with Mark, the company Director! Thanks to the team for a great time. We’ll certainly be back for more adventures.”
