Man set to complete all NZ’s Great Walks in thongs

Mar 25, 2024

A Dunedin man is getting close to completing a charity walk with a difference as he tackles all of New Zealand’s Great Walks in thongs (or jandals at they call them across the Ditch).

After two years, Gus Cope hoped to cross the finish line this weekend when he completes the Routeburn Track.

He said the idea was a joke that had gone too far: “I got my shoes wet while on a tramp (hike) one day and walked in jandals for the rest of it and I said ‘oh I could do all the Great Walks in jandals’ not even knowing any of the Great Walks at the time,” he told Checkpoint.

Cope said he had become used to walking in jandals but walking in mud was difficult. “The hardest part is dealing with mud, cause they get suctioned in the mud.”

Don’t worry you won’t be expected to wear jandals on any of our pack-free guided walks in NZ’s South Island, if fact we’ll tell you exactly what you need to enjoy the walks. So where do we go?

Our most popular walk features the four best walking tracks of New Zealand’s Fiordland region including the Milford, Routeburn, Hollyford and Kepler track combined in a 5-day hiking adventure.

No huts to endure, you’ll love staying at superb accommodation at Te Anau and one night on the charming Milford Mariner vessel on Milford Sound. Indulge in local produce and New Zealand wines every night.

Walking is only part of the adventure on our tours. Add to this our wow-mazing experiences include a helicopter to the top of our Kepler Track walk, jet boating down the majestic Waiau and a feature stay on the spectacular Milford Sound aboard the iconic Milford Mariner and you have a truly inspirational New Zealand walking holiday.

And at the top of the South Island we have two gorgeous walks, plus a third that combines the first two.

Our 3-day Best of the Queen Charlotte Track showcase the beautiful Marlborough Sounds.

You’ll walk through ancient beech forests, along fern-fringed coves and traversing ridgelines revealing breath-taking views of Queen Charlotte Sound and Kenepuru Sound.

By private boat we reach the best sections of the trail each day, whilst at night we stay at the waterfront Furneaux Lodge offering magnificent views, local produce and superb Marlborough Sounds wines.

Our 4-day Best of Abel Tasman Coast Track walk showcases the best of this classic coastal trail through landscapes of rich native forests, beautiful beaches and idyllic inlets.

Once again you reach the start of each day’s walk on a private boat and stay at at the secluded Awaroa Lodge offering magnificent views, stunning local produce and superb New Zealand wines.

Our 6-day Best of the Queen Charlotte & Abel Tasman Tracks combines the above two walks for a week of amazing walking, wilderness and wine!

So do bring your jandals – but just for the luxury huts and lodges!
