Is this the world’s most beautiful lake? We think so!

Our 11-day Mexico, Belize and Guatemala Highlights pack-free guided walk is filled with unforgettable experiences, but one of the most captivating is your time at Lake Atitlán, nestled high in the Guatemalan highlands.

A serene lakeside view from a house balcony invites restful contemplation, perfect for unwinding after walking holidays. Two chairs and a small table overlook calm waters reaching distant mountains with a conical peak under the clear blue sky, as pink flowers hang gracefully over the balcony's edge.

Widely regarded as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world, Lake Atitlán is surrounded by three dramatic volcanoes — San Pedro, Atitlán, and Tolimán — which create a breathtaking backdrop that changes with the light throughout the day.

The lake was formed over 80,000 years ago within a massive volcanic caldera, and today its deep, clear blue waters reflect the rugged peaks and lush hillsides, offering incredible views from every angle.

Three people in vibrant, ornate costumes adorned with intricate beadwork, feathers, and elaborate headdresses bring the spirit of walking holidays to the colorful cultural festival. Holding decorative items, their painted faces enhance the festive atmosphere.

Along its shores are a series of vibrant Mayan villages, each with its own unique culture, language, and traditions. These communities provide a rich tapestry of local life for you to explore during your stay.

You’ll spend three nights at La Casa del Mundo, a beautiful and uniquely designed hotel built into the cliffs above the lake, offering panoramic views and peaceful surroundings.

A colorful spread of Mexican cuisine tempts visitors on walking tours Central America, showcasing a bowl of red mole with chicken, surrounded by various small dishes containing spices, herbs, rice, chopped onions, tortillas, and sauces. Cutlery is placed in the foreground.

One day, you’ll take a short boat ride across the lake to Santa Cruz, where you’ll begin a scenic walk to Jaibalito.

This picturesque route takes you along the water’s edge, through quiet rural villages, grassy hills, rocky cliffs, and lush vegetation. The region’s “eternal spring” climate ensures pleasant temperatures and ideal walking conditions year-round.

A wooden pier invites explorers on walking holidays as it stretches over a calm, blue lake. In the background, two large, green-covered volcanoes rise majestically under a clear blue sky.

Following your hike, you’ll travel by boat to Santiago Atitlán, the largest and most culturally significant town on the lake. Known for its colourful markets, historical churches, scenic parks, and welcoming locals, Santiago is a place where tradition is very much alive.

A cozy bedroom with a rustic wooden bed, colorful quilt, and warm yellow walls evokes the essence of walking holidays. Sunlight streams through large windows with white curtains, offering a view of a lake and trees. Wooden furniture and terracotta tiles enhance the inviting atmosphere.
