Injured kiwi bushwalker didn’t eat for six days!

An injured bushwalker was rescued from a remote hut in New Zealand’s South Island backcountry after enduring six days without food. The 55-year-old hiker had been missing in the Hokitika area for almost two weeks, prompting a dedicated search effort by West Coast Police Search and Rescue teams. The operation ramped up in the rugged Whitcombe Valley last week when a member of the public reported spotting his parked vehicle. This clue helped narrow down the search area, allowing rescue teams to focus their efforts on specific regions of the vast wilderness where he might be stranded.

Although the hiker did not have a personal locator beacon—a tool that could have sped up his rescue immensely—he had taken meticulous notes of his journey, logging his stops and trails in each hut he stayed in. This detailed record-keeping became crucial to the search effort, providing a clear map of his movements and helping rescuers trace his path accurately. According to Matt Newton, owner of Hokitika’s Precision Helicopters, which assisted in the rescue, it was this “breadcrumb trail” that made locating the hiker relatively straightforward once the helicopter team was airborne. Newton explained, “We picked up the SAR team and just started really following his bread crumbs. He left a good account of where he’d been in every hut, so it wasn’t a difficult job, actually, because he’d recorded his movements well.” Thanks to this careful documentation, rescue crews were able to pinpoint the injured hiker’s location quickly, bringing him back to safety after his ordeal.
