How fit do you need to be for a pack-free guided Camino?
One question we get asked often is ‘how fit do you need to be to walk one of our Camino tours?’
The good news is you don’t need to be an athlete to enjoy a Life’s An Adventure pack-free guided Camino, but a reasonable level of fitness is required.
You’ll be walking on varied terrain, including paved paths, roads, hills, bush tracks, farmland and, at times, rocky or uneven ground.
Some days can involve 15-20km of walking, so being comfortable walking for several hours at a time will make the experience much more enjoyable. The best preparation is simply to get out and walk regularly before your trip, gradually building up your distance and including some hills where possible.
Also, you’re not carrying a heavy pack. Your main luggage is transferred between accommodations, so you only need to carry a comfortable daypack with your water, snacks, jacket and other essentials. That can make a big difference, particularly on longer or hillier days.
Life’s An Adventure offers a range of Camino experiences, including the Camino Francés, Portuguese Camino and Way of St James, each with its own mix of terrain, scenery and daily distances. Whichever route you choose, you’ll be walking through landscapes, villages and historic places that have been part of the pilgrimage experience for centuries.
Another hallmark of our boutique walking style is flexibility. Many itineraries offer a choice of walking options, allowing you to choose a longer, more challenging route or a shorter, gentler alternative.
On some days, you can even take time out, relax at your accommodation and simply soak up the scenery. After all, a Camino isn’t a race to the finish line.
This flexibility means guests with varying fitness levels can enjoy the Camino at their own pace. The key is to arrive prepared for regular walking, with enough fitness to comfortably manage the distances and terrain, and then enjoy the journey.
