Glen Helen Lodge reopens for 2022 walking season

Oct 15, 2021

If you ever do one of Life’s An Adventure’s pack-free guided walks in the Red Centre – such as the Larapinta Trail – it’s likely you’ll spend some nights at Glen Helen Lodge.

Glen Helen, 130km west of Alice Springs, is the only accommodation located within the Tjoritja – West MacDonnell Ranges National Park. It features 25 motel rooms, restaurant, bar/bistro, swimming pool and outdoor terrace overlooking the stunning Glen Helen cliffs.

However during this year’s winter walking season Covid travel restrictions forced its closure meaning which put a lot of pressure on tour operators to find alternative accommodation.

The good news is Glen Helen Lodge now has new owners and will be up and running for the 2022 walking season.

A company called G’Day Group has bought Glen Helen Lodge plus Kings Canyon Resort and El Questro – which anyone on Life’s an Adventure’s Kimberley trip will stay at.

One of NT’s showcase walks is the Larapinta Trail offering over 600 species of plants, abundant wildlife and glimpses of the longest continuous cultural history in the world, the Arrente People who have been in the region for the last 50,000 years.

You can experience this walk with Life’s An Adventure a number of ways. The first one is their classic 5-dayer, where you spend two nights at their campsite centrally located at magnificent Ormiston Gorge and two nights at the historic Glen Helen Lodge with its restaurant and pool.

Your next option is the 7-day East MacDonnell Ranges and Larapinta walk, which, on top of the classic Larapinta walk you get to see the ‘East Macs’, a hidden treasure where the locals often frequent, but the tourist rarely venture.

Option three, the 9-day Larapinta and Red Centre walk showcases the best walks of Central Australia including the Larapinta and the spectacular walks of the Giles Track and Rim walk in Kings Canyon as well as Kata Tjuta (The Olgas) and Uluru. Explore rugged mountain ranges, tranquil waterholes and magnificent rocky monoliths on this stunning walking holiday.

And if you really want an adventure you could consider the 11-day East MacDonnell Ranges, Larapinta Trail & Red Centre Walk, which covers all of the above. What an outback odyssey!
