It’s estimated to be around 600 million years old (give or take a day), formed during the ancient Paleozoic era—a time when Earth was undergoing dramatic transformations. This was the era when life, once confined to the oceans, began its bold experiment with dry land. Slippery, fish-like creatures started to evolve little feet, wriggled their way onto solid ground, and slowly adapted to a whole new world. Spoiler alert: it worked! That remarkable leap paved the way for all terrestrial life as we know it today. Standing here, you’re quite literally walking through a chapter of Earth’s evolutionary history.

The distinctive cone shape of the pound was formed through a fascinating combination of geological processes, over millions of years. Erosion played a significant role in carving out the landscape, gradually wearing away the rock layers to reveal the iconic, circular structure. At the same time, the uplifting of ancient rock layers, driven by tectonic forces deep within the Earth’s crust, contributed to the formation of the surrounding high peaks. The result is a stunning, mountainous formation, with a unique and dramatic shape that captivates all who see it—offering a glimpse into the forces that have shaped our planet’s history.

 

On this tour, you’ll have the opportunity to walk both around the rim and inside the magnificent Wilpena Pound. While exploring its vastness on foot is an incredible experience, to truly appreciate its scale and unique structure, seeing it from the air is essential—something you’ll get to do on day two of this unforgettable journey. The aerial perspective offers a breathtaking view, revealing the dramatic contrast between the natural amphitheatre’s lush interior and the surrounding arid landscapes. It’s a perspective that’s simply impossible to capture on the ground, making this aerial experience one of the trip’s highlights.
