In June 2023, New Zealand couple Gill and Warren Press encountered an unexpected situation on their 13-hour Singapore Airlines flight from Paris to Singapore. Seated in premium economy, they found themselves next to a passenger accompanied by a dog. The animal’s snorting, drooling, and flatulence made the journey uncomfortable for the couple. Despite their concerns, the only available alternative seats were in economy class, to which they eventually moved mid-flight.

Following the flight, the couple sought compensation, arguing that their experience did not align with the premium service they had paid for. Initially, Singapore Airlines offered KrisShop vouchers, which the couple declined. After further discussions, the airline provided a refund of approximately NZ$982.50 per person, representing the fare difference between premium economy and economy class.

Singapore Airlines has since stated that it endeavours to notify passengers seated next to assistance dogs before boarding. In cases where passengers request a seat change, the airline aims to accommodate them within the same cabin, subject to availability. However, during this particular flight, the premium economy cabin was fully booked, limiting the options for reseating.

This incident highlights the challenges airlines face in balancing the needs of passengers travelling with assistance animals and those who may be uncomfortable in their presence. It underscores the importance of clear communication and flexible seating arrangements to ensure a comfortable experience for all passengers.
