Enter the secret world of the Samurai on the Nakasendo Way
Famous for their unwavering honour, expert swordsmanship, and fierce loyalty, the samurai hold a revered place in Japanese history and culture.
Guided by the strict code of bushido, they lived with discipline, courage, and deep respect for tradition. Their legacy is etched not only into Japan’s historical record but also its art, literature and folklore.
Now, you can experience the world of these legendary warriors on our 8-day Nakasendo Way pack-free guided walk — a cultural and scenic adventure through one of Japan’s most historic and atmospheric trails.
Known as the “Way of the Samurai,” the Nakasendo was once a vital route connecting Kyoto and Edo (now Tokyo) during the Edo period. Unlike the coastal Tokaido route, the Nakasendo wound through the mountains, offering a safer and more peaceful inland path. It was walked by samurai, imperial officials, traders, and travellers seeking a quieter, more scenic journey.
Today, the trail remains remarkably preserved. You’ll walk through post towns like Tsumago and Magome, with their lovingly restored wooden buildings, cobbled streets, and traditional teahouses. You’ll follow cedar-lined forest paths, pass waterfalls and rice terraces, and cross mountain passes with panoramic views of Japan’s timeless countryside.
But this journey is about more than beautiful scenery. You’ll immerse yourself in the rhythms of traditional Japanese life — participating in a tea ceremony, relaxing in natural onsen hot springs, and staying in an atmospheric mix of ryokan inns and modern accommodation. Every meal, from delicate seasonal kaiseki to hearty local fare, is a highlight in itself.
Our guided Nakasendo walk offers more than just a holiday. It’s a chance to connect deeply with Japan’s rich history, cultural soul, and the enduring spirit of the samurai — all at your own walking pace. Enter the secret world of the Samurai on the Nakasendo Way!
