Iconic outdoor gear brand Arc’teryx has partnered with start-up Skip to develop a revolutionary product: motorised hiking pants. Dubbed the Mo/Go, short for “mountain goat”—a nod to one of the best natural climbers—these high-tech pants aim to make climbing steep trails easier than ever. This innovative piece of gear comes with a hefty price tag of $US5,000 and is designed to give hikers a boost similar to that of an e-bike, enabling them to scale mountains with less effort.
While exoskeletons have been used in commercial and rehabilitation settings for years, the Mo/Go marks a shift towards recreational applications. It is one of the first products designed specifically for outdoor adventurers seeking an extra edge on challenging trails. As reported by Gear Patrol, the Mo/Go is a pioneering entry in wearable tech for the active outdoor industry.
These motorised pants incorporate battery-powered motors positioned at the knee joints, which work by amplifying the user’s movements as they tackle steep inclines. Adjustable carbon-fibre cuffs secure the pants around the legs, while the internal motors augment the quadriceps and hamstrings, giving hikers a push forward and upward. Skip explains that the Mo/Go is particularly beneficial during the strenuous parts of a hike, such as steep climbs or descents. This is when knee joints typically work the hardest, and the motorised assistance reduces strain, allowing hikers to cover more challenging terrain with greater ease.
The Mo/Go has potential benefits for people with limited mobility who may want to experience the outdoors but are typically restricted by steep trails. However, for the majority of hikers, the idea of motorised pants may be a step too far. While the concept is intriguing, it remains to be seen if these pants will catch on with the average outdoor enthusiast, as the high-tech boost may feel at odds with the traditional hiking experience.
