A love letter to Tasmania’s Tarkine

Here at Life’s An Adventure we set ourselves a challenge: describe Tasmania’s Tarkine region in 100 words.

Four people stand on a wooded shore with a calm lake behind them. Dressed in outdoor gear, including jackets and hats, they embrace the Tarkine Walk Wilderness Experience while holding mugs. The background features lush green trees and a cloudy sky.

“This breathtaking expanse of ancient wilderness is home to one of the world’s oldest cool temperate rainforests. It’s an untamed landscape featuring moss-draped myrtle trees, cascading rivers and towering ferns, offering a glimpse into a prehistoric world.
“Rich in Aboriginal heritage, the Tarkine holds sacred sites and shell middens that echo thousands of years of culture and connection. Rare wildlife, such as the Tasmanian devil and orange-bellied parrot, find refuge here. Remote and untouched, the Tarkine is not just a natural wonder — it’s a living testament to time, solitude and enduring natural beauty.”

(Actually we did it in 93 words!)

And here are the other seven: “Go there today with Life’s An Adventure!”

A serene lake with deep blue water is surrounded by lush green forests, reminiscent of a Walking Tours Tasmania destination. In the distance, a mountain range with snow-capped peaks is visible under a clear blue sky, while a small settlement rests peacefully on the lakeside.

At Life’s An Adventure, we’ve long believed in walking as a way to connect deeply with landscapes. That’s why our Tarkine walking tour holds a special place in our hearts. This is not just a walk—it’s an immersion into one of the world’s oldest living forests and one of Australia’s most contested yet precious wild places.

And it seems we’re not the only ones. ABC TV’s Backroads recently visited the Tarkine and guest host, actress Marta Dusseldorp was spellbound by it.

The white boat "Arcadia II" drifts on a serene lake, embraced by lush green hills and a sky dotted with clouds. The tranquil scene, reminiscent of Tasmanian Walking Holidays, is mirrored beautifully on the water's surface.

So if you want to know what all the fuss is about come and join us on our 4-day Tarkine Wilderness pack-free guided walk.

Designed for nature lovers and adventurers alike, this guided journey immerses you in the pristine rainforests, rugged mountains, and dramatic coastline of one of Tasmania’s most treasured regions.

Two people are enjoying a walking experience in Tasmania, hiking among large, uniquely shaped rock formations on a grassy terrain near the ocean. The sky is clear, and the rocks have reddish and brown hues that beautifully contrast with the lush green vegetation.

Begin with a breathtaking cruise along the Pieman River, where you’ll gain insight into the area’s rich history, wildlife, and culture. From there, explore all three unique landscapes of the Tarkine on foot — all while carrying only a light day pack. Our signature pack-free approach ensures you can fully enjoy the scenery without the weight of heavy gear.

Led by our World Class guides, each day offers both awe-inspiring walks and opportunities to learn about the environment through our Conservation Custodians project. It’s more than a walk — it’s a deep connection to one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth.

A person with a backpack hikes down a rocky path surrounded by grassy terrain, overlooking a large lake and mountains in the distance under an overcast sky—a perfect setting for guided walking tours in Tasmania.

We run scheduled tours from September to April every year which is the optimal time to walk in Tasmania. Shoulder months of September, October, early December and April are great times to walk and come with the added benefit of being discounted by $100 per person.
