4 Day Byron Hinterland Walk

(Due to recent weather conditions current walks are closed – below is the updated itinerary)


Day 1: Arrival Day Byron Bay

ITINERARY: Today is an arrival day. Flights are available into Ballina or Coolangatta with airport shuttles to Byron Bay. Make your own way to Byron Bay. Your accommodation for tonight is at the Lord Byron Hotel or the Quarters Apartments. Enjoy a day at leisure to explore this beautiful town or relax by the pool at the hotel. Tonight enjoy dinner at 7.00pm at a local restaurant  served with wine.

 

Day 2: Byron – Rocky Creek Dam – Nightcap National Park 

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning: 1-hour transfer from Byron to the start your walk.

TRAIL NOTES: Platypus Walk (1.5km) or Cedar Walk (2.3km) from Rocky Creek Dam Picnic Area, 1 hr 40 minutes. Moderate Grade.

TERRAIN: Platypus Walk: A relaxing walk through lightly forested land, across the pontoon bridge over Rocky Creek, along the elevated boardwalk beside the creek, through grassy glades, and back across the dam wall. Cedar Walk: This longer walk takes you to the edge of the Rainforest Reserve, through patches of forest, and into areas of rainforest regeneration. You will see forest at different stages of regeneration, cross Rocky Creek, the spillway and dam wall, as well as visit a small plantation of cabinet timbers.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast meet your guide outside of your accommodation at 9am for transfers to the start of the walk. Today’s walk takes us to Rocky Creek Dam where we’ll enjoy the Platupus and Cedar Walk. An array of birdlife are sure to delight and you may be lucky enough to see a satin bowerbird. Whilst the streams are home to a number of threatened frogs barking their charming chorus. On the way keep watch for the mystical lyrebird or a pademelon – one of our smallest macropods. Listen for the distinctive call of the yellow-tailed black cockatoo. Catch a glimpse of frogs, skinks, crayfish, tiny birds and lace monitors. These are just some of the wildlife you might see. Afterwards, we head to our accommodation at the charming Nightcap Ridge Lodge for the next two night set amongst the rainforest. Tonight enjoy dinner accompanied with Australian wines.

 

Day 3: Goonengerry Waterfalls – Goonengerry Waterfalls 

TRAIL NOTES: Goonengerry Waterfalls walk (10km), 3 hours. Moderate Grade.

TERRAIN: Goonengerry Waterfalls Walk: Well formed fire trail. Steep sections as the trail climbs over a couple of mountains.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast at the lodge we head out for the day’s adventure. Today’s walk explore Goonengerry Waterfalls in Goonengerry National Park. We explore a diverse landscape of dry and wet sclerophyll black butt forest with a side track through rainforest to 2 waterfalls which overlook the Wanganui escarpment. We may see some native animal species here including the spotted-tailed quolls, pademelons and potoroos, as well as a variety of birdlife such as king parrots and Albert’s lyrebird. After our walk, we return to the Nightcap Lodge for a relaxing dinner served with Australian wines.

 

Day 4: Boogy Creek Walk – Byron Bay

TRAIL NOTES: Boogy Creek Walk (4km), 2 hours. Moderate Grade.

TERRAIN: An easy, short walk that allows you to meander through the rainforest.

TRANSFER TIMES: Morning 10-minute drive to start of the walk. Afternoon: 1-hour transfer to Byron Bay for celebratory lunch.

WALK ITINERARY: After breakfast at the lodge we head out to finish our Byron Hinterland experience with a walk in the Whian Whian State Conservation Area which takes us through blackbutt forest and along the beautiful Boggy Creek to Minyon Falls. Option to swim in the inviting pools along the creek. After our walk, we make our way to Byron Bay for a celebratory lunch. After lunch enjoy an optional walk along the beach with impressive views.

FINISH TIME: In Byron Bay at approximately 2.30pm after lunch. Or for those doing the optional Byron walk finish at approximately 5.15pm.
